Muskrats and Beavers - do you know the difference?

                                   Birds, birds, birds - Ask me what facts I learned today!

                                       All about wild cats and dogs - what did you discover?

 Ungulates - did you know this means "hooves" Do you know the difference between horns and antlers?

                                   What did you discover about Polar, Black and Grizzly Bears?

 Our task was to draw an animal or bird (we could imagine our own!) and write about its adaptations.

 Off on our adventure through the Bird Sanctuary? Did you know Sanctuary means "safe place"?

We almost missed Mama Goose on her nest on the right! 

                      We discovered a "kill site" Evidence of of some predator and it's prey.

 We were hoping to observe a red-winged blackbird around this wetland and cattails but didn't spot one this time!

Sunny Wednesday

Today a few of us were writers and performers and wanted to share our "Emoji stories" or perform our songs after centres. We are learning to create and write stories using little pictures for ideas. Ask me what centre I chose to work at today!

For Math, Mrs. Armour read the story "1 Hunter" and then our challenge was to find out how many animals there were altogether. We had to add 1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9+10 and then -1 because the Hunter ran away at the end! Ask me if I got the answer and how I figured it out.

Dioramas - We painted our shoe boxes yesterday to show the background of Nose Hill and some of us finished up today. Everyone has a shoe box now - thank you to those who brought extras! We will be adding details over the next few weeks and keep playing, "Did you know?" (facts about our animals) to make sure we have all the details in our research and become experts of Nose Hill plants and animals!

We went on a "stealth search" in the school to see if we could find a match for a picture Mrs. Armour handed out. Ask me who we found and if I remember anything about him! (See picture below for a clue!) We were so busy writing about the man, we forgot about our gym time - we have been trying out the Bouldering wall and yesterday played a game where we had to try and touch all the "puff balls" Mrs. Armour had put on the hand holds. Ask me if I remember 3 rules for the wall.

We played "Did you know?" before Music and then cleaned up and went outside for our Gym time today at the end of the day.

Another Snowy Monday!

This week Tessa, Emmaline, Max and Arthur are helping with the blog - thank you!

We worked on our Journals and tried to make it "top quality" with lots of details, starting with our Topic sentence and ending with a interesting "closer" Ask me what I wrote about and if I read out loud to a buddy.

We did lots of Math today! Mrs. Armour called it a "Goldilocks check" so we can find out the math that's "just right" for us - not too challenging and not too easy! We are starting into addition and subtraction and all about numbers! Most of us are enjoying the "what does 100 look like?" with the one inch graph paper. Ask me what I was working on today.

This afternoon we all worked on our All About Me books. We glued and cut and added details. We don't want to say too much, because we will share these with you when you come but they are looking very colorful and fun!

Georgia brought her art to share today. It was her very first portrait that she made in preschool - so cool! Max also shared a "snake sketch" His snake had details like fangs and rattles on the tail.

Emmaline, Lily, Arthur and Madalynn can bring in their favorite art to share this week.

Monday, April 23rd is the field trip.

Thank you to all who have brought in your SHOE BOXES for our Dioramas to show off our animal research learning. I think we need 9 or 10 more so if you can find extras and are able to bring them in that would be great!

We still need quite a few of the Spring Dance and Carnival forms to let the volunteers know how many to plan for. These are the blue forms.

Tomorrow is Library.

Thursday 4-8pm and Friday 8-12pm are Face to Face Conferences. Please sign up to come in with your student so they can show you some of their learning! Looking forward to seeing you all!

Friday, May 4th CPAWS is returning to teach us more about the birds we are observing all around us. 

Save the date! Wednesday, June 4th is our field trip to Heritage Park.

Thursday

Today we honored the Humboldt Broncos and their families by wearing our Jerseys or Coffin Cares shirts. Some of us brought hockey sticks that the "WE team" set up outside of the front door. We had the Logo on our Smart board in our classroom.

At the Coffin Cares assembly our students were recognized for being Respectful to self, others and the environment. The team did a couple of skits to give us an idea of what being respectful would look like in the classroom and around our school.

We worked on our spelling words today - ask me WHICH words WERE tricky and if THERE were any that we needed to work on with OUR pencils:)

Fun Lunch is always FUN! Thanks to Logan's dad for volunteering today!

Emmaline and Lily can bring their art to share on Monday. Tessa and Max can bring art to share on Tuesday. Getting up in front of the group and sharing gives us practice speaking clearly with a speaker voice and thinking about how to share interesting facts. Our friends that are listening are practicing asking interesting questions about how something was made or maybe adding a fact that connects with what they just heard.

The sun is supposed to come out tomorrow but it will be wet and slushy, so please come dressed ready to be outside to explore our birds with our binoculars! Rubber boots and rain (splash) pants are a great idea if you have them.

Thanks for those who sent back the purple forms for our field trip to Inglewood. We have 3 parent volunteers so they will find another form to sign and send back. THANK YOU!

A blue form is coming home today for the FAMILY DANCE and SPRING CARNIVAL coming on Friday April 27th from 6-8pm. 

Wednesday

We are enjoying our new centres - we think researching animals of our choice (scientist) and performer are the most popular right now. During guided reading some of us read about Origami and making a frog - a few of us enjoyed it so much we wanted to make more of them and teach others how to make them! Trinity, Tessa and Lily shared a "frog play" today for us.


Most of us finished our Picasso portraits and other secret project for the volunteers (shhhh!) Today we used black sharpie to outline and it really makes our painting stand out. Our faces look funny and stretched out with different shapes - but that's all part of "painting like Picasso!"

We really enjoyed the book Mrs. Armour read called Skippyjon Jones - about a cat who likes to pretend he is a Chihuahua so he speaks in a Spanish accent! The author is Judy Schachner if we wanted to look for more books in the library.

In gym we had another day of relays using rackets and puff balls, volleyballs and hoops. Ask me how we used them.

Colin shared his art today - a beautiful, colorful peacock out of feathers - we realized it was symmetrical - not like asymmetrical like our Picasso paintings. Do you know what this means?

Tomorrow is Coffin Cares Assembly and Jersey Day to honor and remember the Humboldt Broncos. We can wear our own jerseys or green and yellow or Coffin Cares T-shirts and hoodies. We can also bring hockey sticks to put outside the classroom door (or mini sticks to have on our desks). We want to show our support and care to those who are hurting. Thanks for caring with us!

A purple field trip form is coming home today for INGLEWOOD BIRD SANCTUARY on Monday, April 23. Thanks for signing and returning this form. If you can volunteer you can tear off the bottom slip and send that in as well. Mrs. Armour will  send another volunteer form home for you to sign.
