Chilly Blue Wednesday

It was a Blue day today, so we had indoor recess and lunch time inside in the Learning Commons. Tomorrow the weather channel says it might get up to -11C, so we will wait and see and dress warm just in case we get to go outside!

In gymnastics today, we are practicing to share with a partner three things. Balance, then travel, then end with a shape. We ran out of time today, so only one group shared. Tomorrow we will start practicing right away so everyone gets a chance to share. Ask me what I am planning on sharing for my balance move! It was fun.

Arthur read from another Blackfoot graphic novel called Ksistsikoom. It means Thunder. Ask me what the story was about. Next time, Mrs. Armour might play the DVD so we can watch it on the smart board.

Today in Music, we learned about "Folly", which is when instruments make sound effects for movies. We also make a film with instruments too.

Thanks to Madalynn, Tessa, Georgia and Arthur that are helping with the blog this week.

Thank you to Samantha who shared her pictures about swimming in the summer at the lake and the pool. It helped to warm us up!

Tomorrow is the first day of February. Did you know it's the shortest month of the year? Ask me to see if I can find a calendar and count all the days.

Grade twos will continue to work on homophones - do you know the difference between THERE, THEY'RE and THEIR? Grade ones are continuing to work on word families. How many IT and IG words can you think of?

Ask me if I have decided on which Nose Hill animal to research. See you tomorrow!

Tuesday

Poetry Challenge - Ask us if we copied a poem, created a poem or performed a poem today!

Gymnastics - we discovered different ways to balance, travel across the mats and had a shape challenge...making our bodies into letters and our partners had to guess what our word was. Ask us what word we made.

Library today - we are bringing home new books to read!

Animal Research - we have a big list of animals that live or used to live on Nose Hill. Our job today and tomorrow is to "image research" all the animals and highlight our "top five" choices. We will choose our own animal to research by the end of the week. A few of us wondered about snakes, so we checked the friends of nose hill website and found that there are garter snakes, chorus frogs and tiger salamanders that live there so we added them to the list! You can check out this website and do some research at home if you'd like.

Sharing - Thanks to Colin and Max who shared pictures of their family trips today! Thanks also to those who keep creating, copying and performing their illustrated poems.

Today we heard we have enough volunteers to add MONDAY TO HOME READING, so thanks for reading and bringing back your book bags every day except Friday now.

Even though the last couple days have been beautiful the weather experts are telling us the snow and cold are coming again. We were hoping to go to Nose Hill on Friday, but that will have to wait for another milder Friday. WE WILL BE GOING OUTSIDE FOR FRESH AIR FRIDAY to explore around the school, so please remind us to dress warm with coats, snow pants, boots, mitts and hats!

Monday

Happy Monday!

Tessa, Georgia, Arthur helped with the blog today. Malik, Ingmar and Lucas had tea today as we didn't have time on Thursday.

Colin, Samantha, Lucas and Max can bring stories and pictures about family trips this week to share.

Today we started Gymnastics. We need to go over our safety checklist before starting...shoes and socks off? Long hair tied back? Any necklaces or scarfs taken off? Loose clothes tucked in? We are starting with the big mats. Two people can be on each mat. We tried different ways to balance and then tried to make all the letters of our first name with our bodies. In gymnastics, we are learning body control through balance, travel and shape.

The amaryllis has grown again! It now has all four blooms for us to admire.

We worked on our family writing and math pattern tubs. Some of us are starting to edit and moving on to our good copies for our writing.

Mrs. Smith came to help again after lunch. The grade ones were with her and the grade twos with Mrs. Armour. We played "Animal Clues" again. Now we will hang the posters around the school for everyone to guess "Who Am I?"

We had finish up/free choice this afternoon. If we had finished our journal and family writing and recorded our math patterns, we had free choice.

At the end of the day we are reading Old Man Coyote. Ask us what we think will happen next between Old Man Coyote and Prickly Porky.

TOMORROW IS LIBRARY and HOME READING.

PLEASE REMIND US TO WEAR COMFORTABLE CLOTHES FOR GYMNASTICS.

PLEASE PARK IN VISITOR PARKING OR ALONG THE STREET, please do not pull into the staff parking. Thank you!

Thursday 25 January 2018

Thursday

Today was our last day of Volleyball. We played two games with beach balls and tried to pass 3 times and then hit it over the net. Next week we will start with gymnastics.

The grade ones brainstormed "it" family words and came up with a couple silly sentences. Ask us how many "it" words we can remember.

The grade twos worked with letter tiles at the back table making words and deciding which vowel group the words fit into.

We are continuing on our poetry challenge, family writing and patterns. How many different patterns can you find at home? Can you make a repeating and growing pattern with your toys?

After Music, Mrs. Smith came to visit and help us with adding details to our Animal posters. We played a "Who Am I?" guessing game. One student gave one clue from one of the posters. Did you know that deer can live up to 15 years and coyotes are predators to beavers?

Thank you to Georgia, Jared and Logan who shared today. It is always fun to see pictures and hear about our family stories and adventures.

Report cards came home today. No school tomorrow. Enjoy your long weekend!!

Coffin Cares T-shirt forms came home today. If you would like to purchase one or more, please return with money and form next week.

We are creating some amazing patterns. Enjoy a few below!

Wednesday

Thanks to Max, Malik, Jared and Lucas for helping with Blog today. We just have a couple of thoughts...

We played volleyball games today during gym. Our hits are going over the nets more and more and we are learning to play together as a team with each person responsible for a different area. We only have one more day to play volleyball.

While the grade ones were printing some "ap" and "an" words at their desks, the grade twos were discovering something called, "The Vowel Circle." This idea groups vowels depending on what our mouths are doing! Smile, open, slider or bossy r's. Ask us if we can remember a word that might fit in each group.

We almost all finished our "Who Am I?" posters today. Those that were finished shared at the carpet. Most of us knew the animal because we've been working together, but we tried to "hold our guesses" until the group read all the clues. It was interesting to hear so many different facts about the beaver, lynx, deer, and bat. Tomorrow the skunk group will share.

Lots of us are sharing poems now - some from books and some we have created. We are becoming poets!

Mr. O'Reilly is giving us a music test tomorrow. Ask us if there is something we can share with you.

Today we had a a "lock OUT" drill to remind us what to do if we get locked out of the school by the Kindergarten room door. This would be while we are going in to gym or lunch or music. Ask us what we would do.

Tomorrow report cards come home. FRIDAY IS A PD Day so no school for students.

Amaryllis update

Our Amaryllis has 2 blooms today and we needed to "stake" it with a branch because it was so tall and heavy it was leaning over! We are so excited how long we get to enjoy this beautiful plant!

An Overview, Our Schedule and Connecting.

Hi! After collecting the blog surveys, there were some who requested a copy of our schedule during the week and how best you can support us at home. Depending on the month or the week, we may have special days or activities (like the Drumming residency), but this is what our usual week looks like to give you an overview of what we are learning in our day. As most of you know, daily reading (listening to us read, and/or reading to us) is one of the greatest gifts you can give, so that would be number one. We all live busy lives, so having some books in the car, to read while you are driving to and from activities is a great way to sneak in more reading as well as audio books to listen to while we are getting dinner ready or getting ready for bed. Doodling is another great way to strengthen our fine motor skills for writing. Drawing circles forwards and backwards, slanted lines both ways, "X's" and squares cover all the different letters we print.

First, here is a quick overview of what we are learning during our days.

In Language Arts, grade ones are now working on word families, at, an, ap...so looking for these in our stories and creating new words is a great way to add to our learning at school. Grade twos are working on long and short vowels and rules that go along with those. Making lists of words you find around home and adding the "rebel words" that don't follow the rules are fun too. Creating silly sentences together helps us all play with language which helps us figure out which sounds go together. Listening and reading poems and looking for patterns in words are all fun ways to support learning.

In Math, we are learning all about patterns around us, with music, actions, shapes, colors and beads; repeating (ABabABabABab) and growing (A,Ab,Ab1,Ab12). This will lead us to look at what patterns we can find in numbers.

Animals all around us is what we are learning about in Science. Their habitats, food, predators, prey etc. After our group completes, "Who Am I" posters, we will get to choose our own animal to research.

All about me, our family and our community is the what we are learning in Social Studies. Sharing about our favorite things and our family help us learn how others are the same and different than us. Thank you for all of your support at home sharing with us about our world.

Mondays - this is our Journal day where we write about our weekend using a Topic sentence, 3-5 details and then a closing sentence in the morning. Telling stories with great description words will help make our stories more interesting and exciting.

Tuesdays - Library in the morning at 10-10:30am and Mathletics in the afternoon 2:30-3pm (a reminder that we work through patterns, and numbers during this time, but at home we are free to enjoy "live mathletics" challenge or creating "our virtual person."

Wednesdays/Thursdays - Music in the afternoons 1:45-2:30pm

Fresh Air Fridays - except for special assemblies, we are usually outside exploring for the morning and have inside recess.

We start the morning with Guided reading groups and centres and usually are working on Language Arts and Math after recess until lunch. After lunch, we have quiet reading time and then work together on Science or Social studies. During the last 30 minutes of the day, we are doing our jobs, helping with blog, sharing, and Mrs. Armour tries to finish the day with a story - right now we are reading through Old Man Coyote by Thornton W. Burgess.

I know this is a bit lengthy, feel free to print it out so you have it to refer to. Hopefully this helps fill in some gaps that you were wondering about. Please always feel free to send me an email with questions or concerns so this is a two way conversation.

Yours together in learning,
Heather Armour

Treat Day Tuesday

Today was Treat Day Tuesday. Thanks to Kindergarten for bringing all the treats to share with us.

We started off with our Poetry challenge but only a few of us were focused so we missed our Volleyball time today to spend more time on our poems.
We need to READ poems, COPY poems, CREATE poems, and PERFORM poems. We all made poem rings and we are trying to get 3 holes punched in each category, so we can earn our "I'm a poet and I know it!" badge. We worked really hard until it was time for Library and thanks to Lily and Colin for sharing their poems they have created.

During Library, Mrs. Kidd said she was impressed how well we are learning to get our books, sign them out and read while we are waiting. There is a really cool Pioneer Village set up in the Library that we can play with if we are really careful and respectful. Thanks Mrs. Kidd and Mrs.Wilkins for sharing this with us!

After recess we worked on our Family writing. We would love for you to share some stories about yourselves, so we can write about your favorite things. Once we had written about one family member, we could move on to Math tubs...all about patterns. Ask us which one we worked at today and what pattern we created.

After lunch and quiet reading time, we had an afternoon working on our Animal "Who Am I?" poster.  We are learning more about working in groups and how each member can have a different part so we can check off our tasks. We typed up our facts, looked for a good, clear picture and created a poster. Ask us how we worked in our group and what we have left to work on tomorrow.  We are going to put up the posters in the hallway and see if other students can guess our animal by our clues.

Some of us went on to Mathletics before we came back to the Clubhouse for some sharing and our read aloud, Old Man Coyote. Thanks Lily for sharing about your trip to Kananaskis! This is our month for sharing about trips. Bring in a picture or draw one and let Mrs. Armour know you are ready to share so we can learn more about our city, country and world.

Tomorrow and Thursday we have Music with Mr. O'Reilly
Thursday report cards come home.
Friday is a PD day. No school for students.

Drumming pictures

Happy Monday!

Today was Journal day. We tried to tell at least one person about our weekend before we started our picture and story. It sometimes helps our brain when we can talk about our thoughts out loud before writing them down. We practiced writing a paragraph together on the Smart board. Mrs. Armour wrote our ideas about the TOPIC sentence, 3 or more DETAILS and a CLOSING sentence. This helps us stay on topic when we write.

We played a volleyball like game today. First, we played with benches and then helped set up the nets. We played boys against boys and girls against girls. It is a little harder getting the ball over the high nets! Most of us remembered PACE and tried our best. Participate, Attitude, Cooperate, Effort. At the end, we told our teammates one thing they did well.

The amaryllis plant now has a stem that is 55cm and 4 blooms! We think it will bloom in the next few days. Ingmar and Emmaline are caring for it this week.

Most of us have different jobs this week - ask us what our job is and how we do it at the end of the day.

Today we worked on our animal research again. We got to type on the computers. The Beaver group accidentally printed their facts to the colour printer so it was lost for awhile, but we found it. Ask us what animal group we are in and what facts we are going to use for our Who Am I? poster.

TOMORROW IS....TREAT DAY and LIBRARY and HOME READING. Please remind us to bring 25 cents (a quarter - what animal is on the quarter?) and our books back so we can exchange them.

Have a great evening!

Friday 19 January 2018

Drumming Day (Friday)

We had a catch up morning today! We caught up on journals, making sure we had the date at the top, and 3 (grade one) or 5 sentences - if not, we tried to add more details. We checked on our family puppets to see if we could find them all and then put them in our folders to save for later (part of our All About Me project). After that, we could choose one person in our family to write about. We brainstormed a couple days ago some of the things we could write about - check out our poster all about it.

We had recess outside because it was so nice and because it was Fresh Air Friday! The bobcat had plowed the snow off the courtyard, so there is lots of snow piles to play in.

Then we went to our Drumming performance. Actually, Mr. Roger said it was more like a "sharing" than a performance, because we are participated, not only the ones with the drums. It was neat to hear all the different patterns from all the different classes. We love drumming!

Thanks to those who returned the survey about our blog and for the comments. Mrs. Armour will try and be more consistent in posting the blog and adding more pictures.

Have a great weekend!

LOOKING AHEAD:
T/W/TH - Home reading exchange
Tuesday - Library day
Thursday, January 25th - report cards go home
Friday, January 26th - PD Day, no school

Thursday 18 January 2018

Thursday - Fun Lunch

Today the grade ones worked with Mrs. Armour on the carpet with white boards and 3 word families...at, an and ap. We are getting quite good thinking of words for "at". Ask us how many we can think of or find in a book that would fit in those 3 families. In Math, we stayed at the same centre as yesterday, so we would have time to record our patterns in our math books. Mrs. Boyer bought more beads for that centre so we have blue again!

Today was Fun Lunch! Some of us had Tim Hortons. Thanks to Trinity's mom and Logan's dad for volunteering...I think there might have been donuts! Trinity loves fun lunch and says she wants it every day.

In Music, Mr. Roger had a "didgeridoo" a wind instrument from Australia. He told us it is also called the "Devil's toothpick" This was the last day of drumming. Ingmar says Mr. Roger wished he could tell us tales about devils but ran out of time. He is a good story teller. We will have our performance tomorrow at 11am. You can come and hear what we have learned in only one week!

After drumming, we worked on our Animal research to make our "Who Am I?" posters. We thought finding the animals "sounds they make" the hardest category. Ask us some of the discoveries and interesting facts we made about our animal.

It was so nice outside we ran laps around the portable to get out some of our energy before coming inside for our jobs, blog, sharing and Old Man Coyote story. We had time for "Tea with Teach" today!

We are bringing home a survey about our blog. Please fill it out and send it back tomorrow or Monday so we can see how many are reading our blog and how we can improve.

Thanks!

Wednesday, January 18th

Hello! This week Trinity, Ingmar, Georgia, Max, Birdy and Emmaline are helping with the blog. Ingmar, Trinity, Emmaline, Arthur and Lucas have shared about "trips." Thank you! Malik, Jared, Colin and Logan can share this week or next week about a trip they went on, whether to the zoo or Timbuktu!

We are doing lots of sharing lately because we are working on our PATTERNS and POETRY. We are working towards getting a special button that says, "I'm a poet and I know it!" Ask us how we can earn this button over the next few weeks!

In the morning, we played volleyball in the gym. We were practicing throwing the ball over the net. Then we tried sitting down, making a "window"shape with our hands and throwing the ball in the air and tried to catch it 2, 3 or 5 times in a row. This helps us with control of the volleyball. We played a quick game at the end just throwing the ball over the net until Mrs. Armour blew the whistle - whoever had LESS volleyballs on their side won!
We are practicing PACE, especially during gym time. P stands for participate, A stands for attitude, C stands for cooperation, E stands for effort!

During Math, we are doing different centres to discover lots of different ways to make patterns. In Beads and More Beads, we have to make patterns with beads. Today the blue ran out, so we think it is a favorite! We have to show patterns with different colors. Once we record our patterns in our math book, we can take home our bracelets or necklaces. Another math centre is Action patterns. One pattern Birdy thought of was, "clap, pat, whistle, stomp" or an ABCD pattern.

We only have one more day of drumming! Our drumming teacher's name is Roger - we call him Mr. Roger. He told us about West Africa and North Africa. Ask us how the drums are different and why.
(Hint: in the north, it's a desert and in the west, there is a forest.) He's super funny!
Parents and family are invited to come and hear us play on Friday at 11:00 AM in the gym. Come and hear what we have learned.

A reminder about the Coffin cares T-shirt tan colored sheet that went home. This was just to inquire how many are interested in ordering shirts or sweatshirts. If we have enough interest, another order form will come home that you can send back with money. Thank you!

Tomorrow is Fun Lunch. If you have ordered one, your child will receive one. If not, you might want to send something a little "fun" in their regular lunch.

Just a reminder to read and send back Home reading. The students book will get exchanged Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday.

Looking ahead to Wednesday, February 7th. It is WINTER WALK DAY. We will all enjoy a walk together as a school and you are welcome to join us!

Friday 12 January 2018

Very Fresh Air Friday

We decided it was a bit too fresh to go outside today - another Blue Day! It has been awhile since have had time with our Big Buddies from Room 6 and 7, so we met with them in the Library to read. Some of us played chess and other board games. It was really fun!

We joined Room 1 and 2 to share our beautiful amaryllis plant that now has three blooms and is 45.5cm tall. It has another stem that is 43cm and we are hoping to have more blooms next week!

We are looking forward to becoming zoologists as study the animals that live (or used to live) on Nose Hill. Mrs. Hamby shared some really cool pictures from her farm. We looked at the clues and tried to decided what had happened just like scientists. Then we read a story, Honey Paw and Lightfoot. Ask me some questions about what we discovered about bears and how they live.

We went back to the Clubhouse for a snack and indoor recess then came together again to find out our  animals and groups for researching. We are going to create a "Who Am I?" poster with at least 7 clues about their appearance, tracks, habitat, food, sounds, survival skills and family group.

Our new category for sharing is "Trips." Ingmar and Emmaline shared yesterday. Ingmar shared about his holiday to Oregon to watch the Eclipse in the summer. He also had sent us a post card when he was in The Netherlands over Christmas break, so it was really neat to get a letter addressed to The Clubhouse! Emmaline shared about her trip to Manitoba to visit her grandparents. It was really fun!
The weekend is a good time to look for pictures and talk about trips you may have taken so we can be ready to share sometime in January. If we are bringing pictures that are not in an album, please send them in a ziplock bag, so they are protected.

Have a great weekend and enjoy the Chinook!

Wednesday 10 January 2018

Blue Day Wednesday!

Today was our first BLUE DAY at Dr. Coffin school....brrrrr! We stayed inside the whole day (except when we had to go into the school for the assembly, gym, lunch and music!) We had snack and played games or colored at recess and then at lunch recess we were in the Library coloring beautiful pictures of butterflies, transformers and pokemon. It was really fun!

We had our second "Coffin Cares" assembly this morning at 9am. We sang the school song and then Mrs. Polski recognized some students who have shown care to themselves, others or our school. Max and Samantha have been great examples this last month making great choices and being kind to others. Thank you!

Grade ones worked on the "an" family and had fun thinking of lots of words for a "super sentence."
One of our sentences was "The womAN rAN with a pAN all the way to JapAN!" The grade twos worked on short and long vowel sounds and used some Star Wars books to help them.

Lily threw the ball and hit the SHARE category of "TRIPS" so this month, we can be thinking of a trip that we made with our families, near or far and bring something like pictures or souvenirs to share with all of us. We can also just take a turn sharing about our trip if we don't have any pictures. (We can share about a trip to the Calgary zoo or a trip to Mexico, or to Edmonton, it's our choice!)

Most of us finished our COLOUR PAGE in our Art Journal this afternoon. We are trying to show all the things we discovered about colour. Primary, Secondary, Tertiary, Warm, Cool, Tint, Shade are some of the words we used.

The weather is staying cold for a couple more days, so please keep dressing warm! I wonder if wearing yellow is warmer than wearing blue?

Thanks Lily, Carmen, Madalynn and Samantha for helping with the blog this week! Here are some pictures of us hunting for patterns around the school and creating patterns with our cube blocks.

Tuesday 9 January 2018

Tuesday - Library Day

Today there were 3 blooms on the amaryllis plant! There is another stem, so we are hoping for more blooms.

It was a chilly, foggy day today. At recess it was so cold that everyone nearly turned into icicles! We needed to put on all our warm hat and scarfs and mitts.

We are trying to remember all the routines again - our indoor shoes, our Library books on Tuesday and Home Reading books for T/W/TH. We started home reading again - a few of us forgot our books, but we still got a chance to read.

We went hunting again for patterns around the school - we know if something is a pattern if it repeats and is in an order like ABCABCABC. Patterns can be shapes, colors or numbers.

We worked on our Title for our Colour page in our Art journals and tried to think of all the things we have discovered about colour.

On Tuesdays, we go back into the Learning Commons to work on Mathletics. We are getting faster on logging in and learning what steps to type our username and password. Mrs. Armour reminded us we can practice at home as well.

Tomorrow we will have another COFFIN CARES assembly. Please wear blue and green shirts if you have them.

Dress warm!

Monday 8 January 2018

Happy New Year!

Hello! Today was a busy day. We had to look for our desks when we arrived. They are now in a big rectangle.
We wrote in our Journals and made pictures. We had a lot to say about our holidays. We tried to remember our Topic sentence, at least three details and then our closing sentence.

In gym, we had four stations to play at: Basketball, Hula Hoops, Skipping and Scoops. Every few minutes, Mrs. Armour would blow the whistle and we would change to the next station. It was a good review of some of the activities we have learned.

In word work we will be working on "word families" The grade ones started today on the "at" family. How many "at" words can you think of? We discovered there are a lot!

For Math we are starting to discuss patterns. What is a pattern? Are there different kinds of patterns? We went on a pattern hunt around the school to see how many patterns we could discover. Some of us found a few ABABAB patterns and some of us found ABCABCABC types of patterns. We will record what we found and share tomorrow.

In the afternoon we had quiet book time and then worked in our Art Journal. We are designing a page to share what we have learned about Colour! We glued our Colour Wheel in today and will work on the title and adding our key words during the week. Remember our "Guess Who" game with clues? We found those and glued them in our journal so we have them for our "All About Me" project.
Mrs. Armour "plant-sat" our Amaryllis and it is just blooming now and looks amazing! We will record the details in our plant book to see how many centimeters it has grown.

The weather looks like we are in for another cold snap Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Please remind us to dress warm in snow pants, hat, mitts and warm boots.

A few of us forgot our indoor shoes today. Thanks for putting them in the backpacks for tomorrow!

LIBRARY Tuesdays.

Home Reading starts up again T/W/TH
