We have worked hard on our story writing with our planning sheets, edited copy,
illustrations and title page!
Thanks for reading them with us when we bring them home -
with a few other things
after we cleaned out our desks today!
We will try our best to bring home everything else on Wednesday
(including our report cards and swim progress report)
Teachers will be at school until noon on Friday if you think of something you may have forgotten.

Teachers vs Grade 6's basketball game - ask us who we cheered for!

Monday

Today we cleaned out our book boxes and then big buddies came and helped us assembly our stories and then we decorated our title page.

We had an Coffin Cares assembly to say thank you to all the students who helped in the office, green team and spirit committee. Grade 5/6 guitar club with Mr. O'Reilly sang a song they had written together and then led us in the Dr. Coffin school song - it was great!

We played math games.

After lunch, we worked on decorating the walls of our buildings and adding details.

We went outside for gym and then we watched the teachers play the grade 6's in basketball! It was close but the grade 6's won.

Tomorrow is grade 6 farewell assembly at 2pm.

Wednesday - Transition morning and swim day!

We had transition day this morning! The grade twos went to Room 3/4 and wrote 2 sentences and had to highlight 6 mistakes, then we discussed which were wrong and wrote the correct spelling underneath - we did a lot of writing!

Grade ones were buddies to the Kindergarteners and we all met in Room 1/2 and Mrs. Hamby read a story about butterflies and then we got all different colored blobs of paint and folded our paper and magic! beautiful painted butterflies!

After recess, we all built a frame to help add our Heritage park buildings - we learned the more square it is, the stronger it is and the supporting sticks really add strength too.

We did math groups working on fact families, subtraction and tens and ones.

We didn't have run club today because we didn't want to be too tired. But we have made our goal because all the grade 1-4's have been walking THREE KILOMETERS to the pool. Great work everyone!
Here's what we did in swimming today!

We did treading water - Tessa
We learned the whip kick and did somersaults underwater and survival test - Ingmar
We learned front crawl - we have to circle our arms - Logan
We did side glides - Trinity
We did back stroke I was so fast and passed both cones! - Emmaline
We did spiderman glides and we jumped into the deep pool - Carmen and Kashia

Monday - writers and builders!

This morning we practiced being "literary critics" reading our friends stories and giving them specific ways of making it better ("I liked how descriptive the beginning was, maybe you can add more detail to the ending.")
After recess Mrs. Armour read another Jan Brett book, Fritz and the Beautiful Horses, Ask me what it was about, the problem and the conclusion.
In Math groups, some of us learned about "fact families" Ask me what I did in math today!

After lunch we discussed frames and supporting beams. We all made frames with supporting beams and then worked as a group to make a cube. This will be the structure of our building. We will be adding walls and windows in the next couple of days!

We had gym with Room 1/2 outside today, it was fun!

We had a special "bench dedication" ceremony to honor Ms. Kestner. She was a teacher here at Dr. Coffin a few years ago, who died of cancer. Her family and some friends joined the whole school to say a few things in her honor. We added some chalk drawings to make it pretty on the courtyard.

Today was Max's last day as he is off on summer holidays a little early. Have a great summer!!

Tomorrow, Wednesday and Thursday are swimming days! Thanks for packing a little extra as we all get pretty hungry after our swim and walk. Thanks again to our volunteers that help us in the change room and walk to and from school.

Tomorrow TUESDAY is treat day. Thank you to the Environment Committee who will be selling BANANA BREAD for 50c Prairie Mills Bakery is supplying the banana bread so we know it will be yummy!

Wednesday is Transition Day. The Kindergartens will come for a bit to see what grade one is like, and the grade twos will go to Room 3/4 see what grade three is like.

Friday is SPORTS DAY. If you would like to volunteer for the morning to run a station, please let Mrs. Armour know.

Fresh Air Friday - Wanted! Weed Sheriffs

Another busy week of writers, mathematicians, architect/builders and swimmers!!

Yesterday, Mrs. Armour was away at her son's grade 9 farewell, so Mr. O came to teach us. We learned more about the Gnomon (sun dial) and how it works. Ask me what I remember about shadows and the sun.

Today we worked on a special project for a special person...sorry, that's all we can tell you.

After inside recess, we discussed what makes a weed, a weed. Ask me what invasive means and if I can remember my "most wanted" weed. Then we went out to the Whispering Woods to hunt for weeds. We were careful to just look and not pull anything out we weren't sure was a weed - dandelions were everywhere and we took pictures of a few we weren't sure of to check out.

Next week is another busy week!
Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday are swimming days

Wednesday is "transition day" so before recess Kindergarteners will be coming to join us to see what grade one is like and grade twos will be going to Ms. Jones and Ms. Cowdy's room to see what grade 3/4 is like. Grade ones will stay to show the Kindergarteners how to be grade ones.
Wednesday is our last Run Club so we need everyone to bring your running shoes and help us meet our goal!

Friday is SPORTS DAY!!

Last day for students is Wednesday, June 27th. Teachers will be at school on the 28th.

Maybe a hawkweed? If it is, some are invasive, some aren't so we left this one!
We think this is a "sticky purple geranium" it has been used by the Blackfoot people as a medicine to help stomach problems. It is not invasive.
These look like strawberry plants - they aren't invasive weeds.
This looks like a yellow daisy, but is actually a hawkweed!
                                                          Dandelions everywhere!
                                                         Weed sheriffs and a witch?
                                                             Official weed sheriff

Tuesday, June 12 Swimming Day!

Today we started with story writing. We all shared our story plan or story so far with a friend so we could give "a star and a wish" something that we enjoyed and an idea to make it better! Then we went and tried to add the ideas into our story.

In math groups today some of us tried 2 digit addition, some of us practiced showing tens and ones, and some of us played, "one more, ten more, one less, ten less"

It was a swimming day again! Here' some of the things we did in our different classes

  • held our breath
  • jumped in
  • dived in
  • got our face wet!
  • pencil floats
  • played red light, green light, purple light (dunk!)
  • treading water
  • whip kick
  • front crawl
Everyone is working really hard! Swimming again on Thursday 14th, 19th, 20th and 21st.
Thanks for packing a little more than usual in our lunches so we have a snack after our swim and big walk back to school!

Mrs. Kidd told us there is an ice cream sundae party for the first class to get all their books returned! We just have a few students who have a few books at home - thanks for helping us look under the beds and on the counters and shelves at home!

TOMORROW IS BEACH DAY! Thanks for joining in the fun with beach hats, sunglasses and "Beachy" clothes. No swimsuits, please.
THURSDAY IS FUN LUNCH! Thanks to any parent volunteers that can help hand out the lunches.
