Friday, February 28th

Today our Big Buddies shared their "Battle Bunny" stories. They have been working on them since before Christmas...ask me what it's all about.

Mrs. Cowdy met with all of us who help with The Big Pick Up to remind us to be leaders in our classrooms and let other students know what goes in the different bins, one use wrappers/recycling/compost/refundable/garbage. Ask me which room I'm responsible for.

We had so much fun with Alien In-Line Skating last week! Ask me how I improved and if I tried any tricks that Curtis showed us.

Over the next several weeks our Storyteller-in-residence, Karen Gummo, will be visiting our class once or twice a week to share stories that will inspire us to create our own. Stay tuned!

ENJOY YOUR EXTRA 24 HOUR LEAP YEAR Saturday, February 29th.
Optional Challenge Question - Why do we have an extra day every 4 years anyway?

Looking ahead:
Math/Science Evening: Thursday, March 12th 5-7pm
Non-Instructional day and Spring Break: Friday, March 20th - Sunday March 29th

Tuesday, February 25th PINK SHIRT DAY WEDNESDAY:)

Today we had guided reading at the start of the day - ask me about my book!

Today was treat day - there were stuffed monkeys!

Today for Alien In-line skating we practiced how to use our brake to slow down and stop. It is on the back of our right skate. Some of us are learning new techniques like hopping, crouching and doing dance moves before moving fast. We are having tons of fun!

Our schedule is different this week depending on when we have in-line skating. Today we had it after recess - for Wednesday and Thursday we have it before recess.

We had science again this afternoon and did an experiment called "Testing the Beams" Ask me if it made a difference if the cardboard bridge was flat or on it's edge?? We guessed at which weight would collapse the bridge...we estimated about 315 grams for one type and the other type did not collapse even with 3 kilograms!! Ask me what standard and non-standard type of weights I used.

Ask me about the dog and bird video and what it has to do with kindness and the "kindness boomerang"

A reminder to wear pink tomorrow if you can! Most importantly is to remember that
KINDNESS IS COOL!!!

Blog in Pictures - Simon Fraser Big Big Buddy Groups, Solar Car and Bridges

Hello! Please enjoy our "picture blog" and ask me for more details!

WEEK AHEAD: Thank you to all who returned their forms for ALIEN IN LINE SKATING next week. Please return the forms (or come in and sign) so we can all enjoy the exciting time this week in gym. Our gym times will be in the morning this week, thank you for being flexible!

Tuesday: Treat Day - a reminder to bring 25 cents to buy a treat at recess!

Wednesday: PINK SHIRT/Kindness Day - let's shower Dr. Coffin with random acts of kindness and respect today!

Did you know this year was a LEAP year? When will the next Leap Year be? How many Leap Years will there be when the grade 2 students are in grade 12? Grade 3 students?
This is a good way to practice counting by 4's:)

Tuesday, February 19th, 2020

We only have a few letters left for cursive writing and then we will start writing a quote of the day for our Daily Warm Up! In our journal today our writing prompt was...
Family Day is a great idea for a holiday because...
Some of us are finishing up our Valentine Magic Box of Chocolates writing.

In Math we did our daily word problem - we had extra valentine problems so are still working on them! Ask me how many grams are in one kilogram? Do you know about how many grams are in one pound
We were also working on multiplication arrays.
For example, an array is a picture of 2 groups of 4 circles. That would be the same as writing 2X4=8.
Then using white boards and 2 cards we made an array and turned it into a multiplication sentence.

This week we will be eating lunch in our classroom because for gym we are doing Jungle Safari!
It was fun! We had to be quiet. PS. No wild animals, only wild kids!!

For technology and science, we worked on our bridge slide shows. Each group had to choose a different kind of bridge in Calgary and research to find facts about it. We will all need another day to work on our slide shows.

TOMORROW we are walking to Simon Fraser for the afternoon 1:00-3:00pm. Other years, Simon Fraser students have come to Dr. Coffin. This time they will be hosting us and be like our "big-big-buddies". We will be divided up into smaller groups to read together, play table games, and do team challenges. Thanks for dressing warm for our walk!
Parents are welcome to join us for the afternoon (or even the walk to and from) if you are available.

On Thursday from 10-11am, University of Calgary students will be coming to give a presentation about how to build a Solar Car! We will get to go outside and take a look at a real Solar Car - cool! (or should we say - hot stuff!)

Wednesday Weekly Catch Up Blog! Pictures!

HAPPY VALENTINES/FRIENDSHIP/KINDNESS/FAMILY DAY!!!

Mrs. Armour was back today! We worked on our bridges slideshows and presented. We will edit and add some more research to each of them now that we've had a chance to share and hear some suggestions from each of our groups. There are a lot of bridges around us. Mrs. Armour took a couple pictures of bridges from Vancouver when she was visiting her daughter and her brother - the Port Mann bridge and the Lion's Gate bridge.

There are some pictures of us trying out the Traverse - Climbing Wall and also listening and asking questions of our grade 5/6 Big Buddies Science Fair projects last week. Ask me if I remember which was my favourite and why!

Last Wednesday was our musical field trip to the Bella Concert Hall with the whole school. It was so fun and THANK YOU to all our volunteers. It was also Winter Walk Day.

This week our writing prompt was..."If I was in charge of World Kindness Day, I would do ask people to do these 3 things..."  Ask me what my 3 things were.

For Math we worked on a review booklet that had questions about time, patterns, word problems and money! Our word problem of the day today was,
"In the bakery, there are 54 chocolate cupcakes divided evenly between 9 packages. How many cupcakes are in each package?"

Ask me how I solved this! Was it challenging? Was it easy? Did I use mental math? Did I draw a picture?
Did I add 9's to get to 54?

Did I subtract 9's from 54 to get to 0?

Did I divide up 54 into even groups?

Mr. O'Reilly read with the Mouse and the Motorcycle Group and the rest of us chose poems to practice and read to the class. Poetry helps us to focus on the words, and say the words in a rhythm. Some words are challenging and some are silly and some are made up so it's a fun way to play with words and learn how to mix up sounds and put words together.

LOOKING AHEAD:
Teacher's Convention February 13, 14 no school.
Family Day Monday, February 17 No school. Enjoy!
Wednesday February 19th, We will walk with the grade 3/4's to Simon Fraser for One World Day.
Thursday, February 20th, U of C will be here to show us their Solar Car and explain how they created it.
Friday, February 21st is Kindergarten's 100 Day Celebration
