Monday, April 29th

Today we had a lockdown practice during guided reading. We had to wait until Constable Rich and Mrs. Polski opened the door and said it was all okay! It's hard to be quiet for that long, but we know it's important.

Today our class went to Mrs. Hamby's to work on the front page of our Arctic paper bag book - ask me what painter inspired our painting?

After lunch we learned about dictionaries and how to use them...one letter at a time! Ask me what word our group tried to find.

Simon Fraser band came and shared some beautiful music! One was a story song with different animals...have you heard of Peter and the Wolf? Check out the link in the next post!

Tomorrow is Treat Day!

We have Teacher's Pet coming on Wednesday morning 9-11 to help us discover Acadia!

Just a reminder to discuss snacks with your child. We like to share but we do not share snacks or ask for someone else's snack here at Dr. Coffin. This keeps everyone safe. If you are hungry, please let one of your supervisors or teachers know! Thank you!

Peter & The Wolf - Disney Story - Simon Fraser band played part of this Monday!

Coffin Clean-Up!

Today we did a whole school Spring clean up! Our class picked up trash in front of the school and
along the fence.
We found wrappers, pencils, pop cans, a metal post and Emmaline even found a bag of dog poop! Ms Cowdy and Ms Jones classes are going to do a survey with all the trash we found.

Then we went into the nature grounds and built inuksuit. Check out some of our work!

Have a great weekend!

Jared shared his dinosaur tooth today from his camping trip to Dinosaur Park.

We used voice writing on Chromebooks today. We have to go to Docs, then Tools,
then Voice Typing.

Fresh Air Friday tomorrow. Dress for the weather!

Windy Wednesday! April 24th.

Today we had two special visitors from Sir Winston Churchill school to
remind us to try and use less "one-time use" plastic. Here is one place in
Calgary to buy stainless steel straws.

https://www.the-apothecary.ca/Stainless-Steel-Coloured-Straws-85_p_891.html

Mrs. Wilkins Kindergarten came to listen too! It was fun to have them in
the Clubhouse.

Graham shared his cool lego ferrari car today and we made an Adjective/Noun/Verb sentence using it as an example.

Red Ferrari racing! (Ask me to give you another sentence.)

Today we put up our Inuksuk and glued our information labels on and decorated them! Check them
out! We are proud of the work we did!

In math each table group created a word problem for the rest of the class. Ask me what our groups
"math story" was.

This afternoon we worked on assembling our Arctic paper bag books!

Tuesday, April 23

Did you know today was St. George's Day? Do you know the legend about St. George and the dragon? We decided it was a good day for Georgia to share! She shared an Arctic box she made at home. It had a beluga whale breaking through the ice and other animals on land. She even made northern lights. Ask me another name for northern lights!

We started with Journals and after Guided reading shared some ideas of what we did on our Easter weekend. Ask me if I wrote 3 or more ideas. Ask me if I shared my journal with someone else and helped them edit theirs.

After recess we practiced nouns, verbs and adjectives as a group and then on our own. Ask me to tell you what are some hints to remember if a word is a noun, verb and adjective.
Big, white beluga whales splashing! Can you tell which word is which?

Today we worked on some adding and subtracting for our word problem. We didn't use real numbers for baby teeth (there's only 20) to make it more of a challenge!

If Mike had 30 teeth and lost 2 in Kindergarten, 5 in grade one and 7 in grade two, how many teeth did he lose in total
Ask me if I had to add or subtract.

Next question - How many teeth did Mike still have in his mouth?

Challenge question - If the tooth fairy left a dime (10 cents) for every tooth, how much money did Mike get in total? Remember to think just one step at a time! It's okay to use something to show the "teeth" (pencils, marbles, lego) Ask me how I figure this out.

Over the next week, we will be assembling our Arctic Paper Bag Book. Ask me what we glued in today.

For gym we went outside and practiced throwing frisbees at targets. It was a bit windy so we discussed how to check first and throw with the wind!

We used Chromebooks after gym to write up our information for our Inuksuk. We will be displaying our giant inuksuit in the clubhouse.

Thursday 18 April 2019

Thursday, April 18th - Happy Easter!

Today we gathered at the carpet with our suitcases to check to see if we had everything we needed to go on our Arctic Adventure - we have used this website as our "go to" to research lots of different things about Nunavut. Ask me what I needed to add to my suitcase!

https://www.nunavuttourism.com/

Mrs. Armour wrote the sentences that she had dictated to us on the Smart board and we checked our sentences to see which words were easy for us and which ones we still need to practice! This is really grade two work, so the grade ones challenged themselves to check if they had all the "ot" and "an" words spelled correctly and had Capitals and periods. We discussed which words might have been "tricky" and came up with - were, called, and a lot (a lot of us spelled it as one word alot).

For Math we used Chromebooks to write up our information page for our Inuksuk. Ask me what ours was called and what does it mean. Ask me if I remember how tall or wide it is. We will display these in the hallway next week!

Today was Fun Lunch! Thank you to Max and Joel's moms (Adrienne and Emily) who volunteered!!

Thank you to Max and Roman who brought easter treats for all!

After Library, we ran a lap outside and then divided up into "Arctic Bird" groups - Snowy Owls, Tundra Swans, Arctic Terns, Ravens and Ptarmigans and went into the wild to hunt for our eggs.

Enjoy your long weekend! No school Good Friday or Easter Monday. See you Tuesday, April 23rd!

Thank you for returning your YELLOW FORMS for next year and SWIM FORMS for May.

We will be having Teacher's Pet come for an in-school field trip on May 1st. It will be a great introduction to our Acadia/East Coast Adventure! It is $14/student. We will send home information and forms next week. If you are available to volunteer on Wednesday, May 1st from 8:45 - 11am, please email Mrs. Armour.

Tuesday 16 April 2019

Tuesday, April 16th

Colin shared his dinosaur bones today! They were from great grandpa's farm when he was a kid.

Today we worked on editing and adding to our journals. Ask me what I added
or changed!

For Word Work we brainstormed "ick" words and "ot" words. How many can you think of? Can you make a silly sentence with a few of the words?

Today we had mini parachutes in groups. We tried to do the "mushroom" but it was too small. Then we played "popcorn" and "all around the mulberry bush" then we did some relays.

Today we started to use the new school Chromebooks. The grade ones had to share with grade twos because they needed new passwords.

THANK YOU FOR CONTINUING TO READ our Home Reading books and bring them back to change every day (except Friday). The volunteers have all noticed how much we have improved over the year! Yay for reading!!

Thank you for sending in the yellow forms for next year and the SWIM forms for May. Thank you for our 3 volunteers who have already signed up to help with swimming.

Ask me what my homework is (hint: it has to do with voting)

Run Club tomorrow at lunch.

Fun Lunch (Subway) is on Thursday.

Easter weekend is coming! No school for students on Friday, April 19th or Monday April, 22nd.

Wednesday 10 April 2019

Wednesday

Today was our new friend Sion's (pronounced Sean/Shawn) share day.
Ask me what he shared!

Today was twin/triplet day - ask me what Ms. Jones challenge was outside!

We are continuing to practice noun/verb/adjective - ask me to give you an
example of each word - can you make a silly sentence?

Mrs. Armour read a Blackfoot legend called, "How the Prairie Anemone Got its Fur" by
Annora Brown, then we drew crocus' in our art journal - so beautiful!!!
Ask me what reason the story/legend gave for the colours and "fur" on the crocus.

Today was Run Club - ask me if I ran! We run 2 big laps (Terry Fox run route) which is
about 2km. We used popsicle sticks to keep track of how many laps altogether - today we
ran 55km!! Wear your Coffin Cares shirts/sweatshirts next Wednesday and join us at the
picnic tables after the first bell at lunch. We run first and then eat together.

We went over our Math word problem (ask me what my number sentence and word sentence was for step one and two (see yesterdays blog for the details) and used cubes to work it out as a
class - then after we had fixed any problems we had we made inuksuit with
cubes and tried to make up new math challenges for our friends.

This afternoon was our last chance to create a warm and dry insulator for our
Arctic buddy - we gave ideas/feedback to our friends to let them know what
we thought they had done well and something they might want to fix or add.
Tomorrow our arctic buddies go into the Arctic! (Mrs. Armour's big cooler with
ice packs). We will take 3 temperature readings to see if the water in our Arctic
buddies stays the same or drops. Friday we will do the "rain test" to see if our
Arctic buddies can stay dry.

Library tomorrow!

Looking ahead - Friday, April 19th is Good Friday and Monday, April 22nd is Easter - no school.

May 1st - our "in-school field trip" Teacher's Pet is coming to help us discover Acadia culture. We will need 3 volunteers from 8:45 - 11:00 AM. Let Mrs. Armour know if you are available to help. More information will be coming home after the long weekend.
