Sports Day, Magnets and Farewells...

Today we did some investigation with MAGNETS! Ask me what I discovered about what things attract and repel magnets.

We also cleaned out our desks so our backpacks are full!
We will be done school at 12:00 pm tomorrow,
but thanks for sending me with an empty backpack just in case we forgot a few things!

We had 2 assemblies today! This morning while Kindergarten was still with us, we said thank you for the great year to everyone then the K's had a picnic!
This afternoon was a special FAREWELL to the grade 6's, they all looked so spiffy and grown up. We congratulate them and wish them all the best in grade 7!

Here are a few pictures from Sports Day on Monday - Mrs. Armour was at the 3 legged race station, so that's why there are mostly pictures from that!

THANKS TO ALL MY WONDERFUL CLUBHOUSE PARENTS AND STUDENTS who have been so generous and supportive all year! Have a wonderful summer, get outside and read, read, read!
~Mrs. Armour will miss all your smiling faces! See you in September!

Ships and Sails - Thursday

Sorry! Unfortunately, due to the unpredictable weather, we will not be going to Nose Hill Friday (tomorrow). We will be planning to be with Saakokoto either in the Learning Commons with Room 1 and 2 or if the weather cooperates, perhaps the Amphitheatre in Whispering Woods (so thanks for DRESSING FOR THE WEATHER).
Parents are still welcome to attend our meeting with Saakokoto!
Here is the schedule for his time tomorrow:
Kindergarten 9-9:25
Grade 5/6 9:30-10:30
Grade 3/4 10:35- 11:35
Grade 1/2 11:40-12:15
Thanks for being flexible with our crazy Calgary weather...HAPPY FIRST DAY OF SUMMER:)

Most of us completed our ship building today and tested it in the "Bay of Fundy" (outside in the water table)
Ask me if my ship
  • floated
  • was stable/balanced
  • moved without touching (wind or paddle wheel)
  • carried a load

Inch worm, inch worm, measuring the marigolds...and arms and legs and...

We have been discovering the difference between perimeter and area, estimating then testing to see how close our estimate was.

Today was Transition Day where the grade twos went to visit the grade three classrooms to see a little bit of what it will be like next year! We worked on graphs with a buddy. Grade ones were all together in Room 1 and 2 and welcomed the Kindergarteners. Mrs. Hamby read "Gingerbread Baby" and then with our little buddies, we measured our hands, arms, feet and legs. Then we each coloured a half of our "gingerbread kid" to take home. It was fun to practice being the leaders! Check out Room 1's blog to see some pictures.

If we were a part of Run Club today was celebration day! We didn't run but ate together in the Clubhouse, total laps/km run....525!!! Well done. As a symbol of "passing the baton" we all got pencils:) See you back running in September!

We reviewed our plans, shopped at 'Home Depot' and started our ship building today!

TUESDAY but Looking Ahead to Friday, June 21st - please note!

Thanks to Blog helpers today!
Today we did arctic stories. Some people after that worked on their edits for nova scotia slides.

We all had to find a "new fact that nobody knows" from a Nova Scotia book. Ask me if I remember my fact!

Max shared about his Paris trip.

Today we made sailboats for 20 minutes.

Ask me what shape mine was and how it moved. TREAT DAY TOMORROW - please send .25 cents for recess!
Last RUN CLUB tomorrow.

This Friday we are hoping to enjoy our last Fresh Air Friday up on Nose Hill. Saakokoto will be with us and will share stories of the land and Summer Solstice with each class. We require volunteers for the walk to Nose Hill. If you are able to volunteer, please let me know. We are also planning to have some fun activities up on the hill. We will head up to Nose Hill at 9 AM and return by 11:30.
(Just a heads up! We are hoping the weather forecast will change so we can proceed with this plan! If not, we will let you know by Thursday afternoon)

Monday, June 17

Ask me what I wrote about in my journal today (summer or the weekend?)

Ask me what we did in GYM and MUSIC.

Ask me about my BOAT BLUEPRINT (plan).

Today in Math, we learned about PERIMETER and AREA. Ask me what
I estimated for the perimeter of the desk and what the actual number was.
Did you know that "PERI" means around and "METER" means measure?

Wednesday is Treat Day hosted by...the teachers! The money will go to help
the Environment Committee.

Wednesday is also the last RUN CLUB.

Next Monday is Sports Day (for the morning).
Tuesday is final Assembly (morning) and Grade 6 Farewell (afternoon)
Wednesday is last day for students. They are dismissed at noon.

Fresh Air Friday - counting and planting

Today we counted our steps all the way around Whispering Woods! Some of us
tallied, some of us counted...our steps are all different so this was called "non-
standard" measurement. Most of us counted between 400-600 steps! We had
4 different checkpoints to gather together so no one was too far ahead or behind.

On our way, we saw the ALBERTA ROSE blossoming and so many BUFFALO
BEANS blooming. Did you know....
They are also known as “Golden Beans” or “Prairie Bean”.

Although they are members of the pea family and produce bean like pods, they are also toxic and so should not be eaten.

First Nations people used the Buffalo Beans as a source of yellow dye and to time their bison hunt. It is said that when the Buffalo Beans bloomed, the bison would be passing through and their meat would have of the desired quality for hunting.

After counting we planted CARROTS and SQUASH in the sun circle planters. Thank you to all who volunteered to get our gardens ready. Ask me what the difference is between carrot and squash seeds? Ask me how I planted the seeds. Thank you to all the volunteers that signed up to help water our plants through the summer months!!

SaaKokoto will be here for a visit next Friday.
Monday, June 24 is Sports Day. June 25 is the end of year Assembly and Farewell to grade 6. Wednesday, June 26 students are done at noon.

8 days left of school. Stay focused. Be kind.
