Wednesday

This morning we worked on gathering all the parts to our Harvest recipe books, making a front and back cover and tying all the pages together. When we were done, we played a spelling game where we chose a card with a word on it, then we had to find all the letter tiles to spell it, then we had to print it on a white board. It was fun to see how many words we could write.

Grade 2's had quiet reading while the grade 1's had printing. We are working on Cc, Oo, Ss, Vv, Ws this week. We are trying to make careful letters - 5 neat letters are better than 15 squished, so it is okay to take our time! Then we look through alphabet books to find words that begin with those letters and print them in our books.

We watched a video about arthropods and reviewed the characteristics and learned they are divided into four categories by the number of legs. Ask me how many legs in each category and if I can remember an example. Then we chose one that we are interested in researching and wrote it on a sticky note.

This week we are practicing soccer skills in the gym - forward, backward and stopping with control with our feet - today we tried keeping the ball on one colour while Mrs. Armour called out, "Red light! Green light!" and then played "Keep Away" and a couple short games.

In Math we are finishing up our Vehicle Survey graphs and discussing "What do we notice?" or "What information can we learn?" from a graph. We looked back at our Birthday graph and tried to think of all the "math things" we notice about our graph - here are some of the things we thought of...

Tuesday - SNOW!

There is a lot of snow out there!! We tried to be really careful walking to and from the Clubhouse, but whoops - down went Colin on his belly! Good thing he had an extra shirt - thanks Mom!

Mrs. Carpentier (our OT) was back and she taught us another meaning for STOP to use when we are working at school.
S for space.
T for time.
O for objects.
P for people.
Ask me what these all mean. She gave us a really fun project - ask me what we made.

During gym time, we are working on soccer skills - controlling the ball with our feet, passing and stopping. Ask me what my favorite station was, and which one was most challenging.

This afternoon we talked about the 6 characteristics (what they look like) of an anthropod. Ask me how we know humans are NOT anthropods:)

1. They have jointed limbs.
2. They are invertebrates - no backbone.
3. They have an exoskeleton.
4. They have good senses.
5. They have bilateral body symmetry.

We went on to the computers to research bugs, but some of the computers weren't working so here is the website if we have time tonight to take another look at which anthropod looks interesting.

Thursday - Our Classroom ideas

Today we all helped with our blog.

Today we learned to do number counting by listening to The Hungry Caterpillar and counting the food.

Today was our last day of SOGO. I wish we could do SOGO every day!

We had library even though Mrs. Kidd wasn't there - she went to Nose Hill with the grade 5/6's.

Today we worked on our painting filling in the background. If it was too dark we added more water and if it gets too light we would add more paint.

I wish we could do the same jobs for a month - I really like sweeping the floor!

We had inside recess because it was too rainy and we were going outside for SOGO.

We wrote our poems and one of mine was Goodbye flip flops, Hello warm socks.

We didn't get to go to Nose Hill for SOGO because it was too cold and wet but we still did SOGO. We used a map and had to punch each station.

Today we wrote poems. One of my sentences was "Goodbye mosquito bites, Hello cats on my lap by the hearth."

We went to library and I got a book called Dork Diaries.

During SOGO at each station instead of computer card, we needed to punch this paper list that had an X that meant man-made material and there was X with a circle around that meant "dead wood"

After eating lunch, we played tag outside with Kasia and Emmaline. It was fun!

We went to the library and I got The Princess in Black and in it they are planning and made a party.

Tomorrow is Fresh Air Friday. We will be planting bulbs and tallying vehicles at Barrett Park. Please dress for the weather. Hopefully a little warmer than today!!

Wednesday

Just a quick note today to remind everyone to DRESS FOR OUTSIDE SOGO to Nose Hill tomorrow - layers and running shoes, not rubber boots even though it might be raining, we will be running:)

We will be leaving at 9:00AM to walk to Nose Hill so we can start our stations at 9:30AM until 11:30AM. We have a couple of volunteers but anyone with a police clearance is welcome to join us as we will have all three grade 1/2 classes walking up to Nose Hill. (You do not have to run to be a volunteer - just assist in crowd control:).

Today we brainstormed Summer and Fall words to get ready for our "Hello Fall, Goodbye Summer" poem...ask me to give you a little sample! (One of Mrs. Armour's favorites was "Hello warm socks, Goodbye flip flops!"

Ask me about SOGO today. We did a maze and tried to remember all 12 stations...without our map! Then we played Capture the Flag. Mrs. Armour forgot to take pictures, so check out Room 1's blog as Mrs. Hamby took quite a few!

We worked on our paintings - if we were finished our foreground details, we started on our background.

We had Music today - ask me what we did.

We read another chapter of Bowser the Hound. Ask me what happened to Bowser when he was following Old Man Coyote.

Reminder - LIBRARY day Thursday so bring back your books so you can check out more!

See you tomorrow all ready to run around Nose Hill!

Tuesday, September 25th

Today we started the morning by finishing up our 3 recipes. We had a checklist and samples to make sure we
  1. Circled or highlighted all the important words (ingredients and action words like ADD, POUR, MIX)
  2. Cut and paste pictures of the ingredients or drew them onto our 3 recipes.
Then it was time for SOGO...today we worked on endurance and navigation! Ask me about my map and what I learned about endurance...

Coach Kim giving instructions on how to use the map to find the different stations.
Finishing up our 5 laps endurance run through Whispering Woods.

After lunch we started painting our "fall still life" sketches. Ask me about some of the techniques I used if I had too much paint or too much water.

Here is a poem we are learning - it helps us learn the numbers and number words to twenty (20) and is all about gardening. We are wondering if we should put it to music - we will have to ask Mr. O'Reilly! This is sometimes what Mrs. Armour uses to call us to the carpet.
Mrs. Armour red this beautiful autumn book all about the sugar maple.
After painting we had free choice if we had finished our recipes, printing and reading log books.
We also started reading Bowser the Hound by T.W. Burgess
SOGO tomorrow from 11:00-12:00 if there are any parents who would be available to volunteer tomorrow or Thursday from 9:30-11:30 when we go to Nose Hill with SOGO, please let me know! Thanks to Elizabeth's mom who helped out today to make sure we all stayed on track!
Thanks for sending the purple sheet back in so we know the stories of our names.
