Happy Thanksgiving - Enjoy your long weekend!

Today after Daily Warm-Up and Music, the whole school went to the Learning Commons to welcome SaaKokoto back to Dr. Coffin and listen to a story. We all got an animal sound to help make his story more real - ask me what animal I was!

In writing we are continuing to work on words that describe (ADJECTIVES) these words usually go in front of NOUNS. We are also learning we can make our sentences even more interesting when we add ADVERBS (usually words that end in "ly" and answer the question "how?") after action words (VERBS). So, here is a boring sentence.

The dog ran.

Ask me which words I can add to turn this boring sentence into an exciting sentence!

After lunch, we were invited to go to Room 1/2 to share in their Thanksgiving/Harvest Soup Feast! We were thankful! Ask me what kind of soup it was and if I had seconds:)

We played some mini soccer games - we are learning to think about PACE during gym time.
P - did I participate?
A - how was my attitude?
C - did I cooperate with others?
E - did I give my best effort?

SaaKokoto came for a visit to The Clubhouse after gym and showed us a very cool picture of him holding an eagle (ask me if I remember the Blackfoot word - it starts with a "p") and told us stories of paying attention to the animals and the land around us and a legend of "How the hoodoos were formed." It was too short of a visit, but we are looking forward to him coming a few more times this school year.

To finish the day we made thanksgiving leaves and did the Big Pick Up.

Keep your eyes open and look for patterns all around!

Tuesday, October 8th

We got our new jobs for the week yesterday. Ask me what my group's job is! Thank you to Max, Adeline, Enxin and Joel S. who are helping with the Blog!

Math - we are starting patterns (although we really have already been talking about them with multiplication! and with the cycle of the sun and shadows.) We are colouring number patterns in 120 charts using 2's/3's/4's/6's. This will help us practice our multiplication facts by looking at patterns (how the core numbers repeat). Today we wrote 2 rules about patterns:

  • a pattern has to repeat at least 3 times to be called a pattern
  • the CORE is the part of the pattern that repeats
Then we had to make 3 different patterns in our math books like Days of the Week/Months of the Year or 10 months on school, 10 months off. Ask me if I can find 3 patterns around the house!

Writing - Mrs. Armour read the book, Circle of Thanks by Susi Gregg Fowler. The grade 2's wrote about what they were thankful for yesterday and tried to use descriptive words (colour, size and shape). Today the grade 3's wrote about what/who they were thankful for and why. The grade 2's had to pick something in the book and describe it (Arctic fox, Otter pup, Raven, Caribou, a boy).

We were outside for soccer skills yesterday but today back in the gym playing mini games.

Art Science- we are using the same technique with warm/cool colours for the background and then creating a spooky, Halloween picture using black paper cut outs - this is called silhouette. It looks like a shadow. Next week, we will start to brainstorm describing words and begin planning our story about our picture.

Some of us who finished our picture made paper friendship fortune cookies! All you need is to cut out a circle and then fold it just right and slip in a happy note about friendship!

At the end of the day, Mrs. Armour is reading aloud from the book, Blacky the Crow by T.W. Burgess. Ask me what is happening in the story.

Our friend SaaKokoto will be with us at Dr. Coffin on Thursday. We are looking forward to hearing more of his stories and teaching us about the Blackfoot ways of knowing.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO JOEL L. tomorrow!

LOOKING AHEAD: Happy Thanksgiving - Non-instructional Day this Friday, October 11th. No school Thanksgiving Monday, October 14th.

Your student should have brought home swim forms today. The dates are October 24, 28, 30 and November 4, 6, 13. Each classroom requires 3 volunteers for our walk to and from the swimming pool. Our class will be swimming from 1:30 - 2:10 pm so if you can volunteer we would need you between 1:00-3:00 pm.

Parent council tonight in the Learning Commons at 7pm!

Fresh Air Friday - Things that Reflect

Today we all helped with Blog - thank you students!!

Today was the big pick up! Surprisingly it was fun:)

Today for Fresh Air Friday we did a scavenger hunt for things that reflect. We had to try and write our clues backward so we had to use a mirror to read the other group's clues! It was tricky and a bit confusing to place all the clues in the right place!

Ask me what I found outside that reflected!

Today we got our Ninja necklaces! They are for Ninja beads. Everyone got a necklace with their initials on it. We can wear them at school (except for gym time). They are to show we are in training to become Ninja masters at being Respectful Citizens of Dr. Coffin! You can trade in 10 tickets for one bead. The first colour you earn is white, then yellow, orange, red, green, blue, purple then black! Ask me how you earn a ticket. You can also trade 5 tickets to get something in the "Star box". It's like a dollar store toy.

Thanks for bringing in your earphones for next week! We have extra (thank you Wongs!) so don't worry if you didn't get a chance to get them.

Tuesday, October 1st Update

Yesterday and today we had tons of fun in the snow! Thank you for sending us with all our snow gear, so we can stay warm and play! An extra pair of socks/sweats to keep in our backpack always comes in handy just in case we get wet.

Yesterday was also Orange Shirt Day. During writing we wrote the "Acknowlegement of the Land" to remember and recognize the Indigenous people and culture. Did you know that "Oki" is how the Blackfoot people say "hello" and they call themselves, "Niitsitapi"?

We are learning to use dictionaries! After finding all the mistake words in the Daily Warm Up sentence, we are now trying to find how to spell each correctly.

Check out our Science Art - Silhouette Trees - Sunrise/Sunset. Ask me the steps and what I still need to complete.

All the "goal portraits" should have come home today, thanks for checking backpacks!

Thank you to Aadhya who presented her "Paw Patrol" slide show she researched and created at home. Very interesting and fun!

Check out our mixed up sentences we had to fix for writing and a couple of our Math problems as we continue to learn different strategies.

Did you know a multiplication operation sentence can be described in words to help us remember how to solve it?
So for 4 X 3 = ? we can say that means, Four groups of Three and then draw it out or do mental math.
We are learning that division is like the opposite of multiplication. So if 4 X 3 = 12 then we know that 12 divided by 3 equals 4. We are using blocks and cards to practice "seeing" the math.

Next week, we will start our Literacy centres/Daily 5 (Word work, Work on writing, Listen to reading, Read to someone, Read to self). Today Mrs. Armour explained each of the tubs.
We will be practicing vowel sounds, how to put sentences together and story writing.

REMINDERS:
To assist with our "Listen to reading" centre starting next week and to keep our germs to ourselves, please send in an inexpensive pair of headphones for your student to keep in a baggie in their desk. Please email Mrs. Armour if you have any questions or concerns.

No Run Club tomorrow because of all the snow. Stay tuned next week!

Assembly on Wednesday - Kindergarten will be in charge!

Fresh! Air Friday - Run For Terry *Orange Shirt Day Monday*

TERRY FOX RUN

Terry ran from the Atlantic Ocean to Thunder Bay.

Terry skipped when he ran because he only had one good leg.

He was only 22 years old. Terry sacrificed for us.

We watched this video about Terry...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EOPcR2dC_kM

Here's what we all had to say about today...

Our class ran 101 laps! Dr. E.W. Coffin ran over 1000 laps!

THANK YOU TO ALL THE VOLUNTEERS!

We had an assembly for the Terry Fox Run.

At the assembly the grade 5/6 led us through some warm up exercises.

We barely had time for a snack before the run, so finished after.

The warm-ups were better than last year.

I ran with Kipling and we did 7 laps.

I ran with Elizabeth and did 6 laps.

We ran for Terry and Terry ran for us.

We are still trying to find a cure.

People are running for Terry.

You don't run for points, you run for Terry!

I ran for my Mom.

Happy Birthday Kais and Yazmine!!

Ask me about being a NINJA STUDENT.

Tuesday, September 25th

Yesterday, Mrs. Armour was at a meeting in the morning so we were excited that Mr. O'Reilly was able to come to The Clubhouse to help us with our Daily Warm Up and Journal writing. (We could write about our weekend or start with this sentence..."If you could invent anything, what would it be and why?" Ask me what I wrote about...today we had more time to add interesting details and juicy words, check for spelling mistakes and if what we wrote made sense. We are supposed to find 2 friends to read our writing and ask them if they have any ideas to improve it. We are learning that writing is a process, not an event. Great writing takes time and a lot of editing!

For math we all thought our problem was was too easy! That means we are using the logical reasoning strategy well. By reading the clues one at a time and finding all the answers that are not right, it is much easier to find the answer! Here is one to try at home.

Sam has 5 pets. She has a bird, a turtle, a cat, a snake and a hamster. She took all of them to
the fair. One of them won first prize. Here are some hints.
           It can't fly.
           It has four legs.
           It is not furry.
Which one of the pets won the prize?

Today we learned the making a table strategy. Here is a short version of one of the problems we worked on. Ask me which are the important (vs. interesting) words to highlight. It is great if you can figure this out in your head (mental math)! It is still important to learn how to show your steps so when the problems get harder, you can remember the steps.

How many elves were at the picnic. Here are the clues.
         There were more than 15.
         There were fewer than 24.
There was an even number of elves.
The number had an 8 in the ones place.
How many elves came to the picnic?

In technology time we had the choice to do Dance Mat typing or RAZ kids. Ask me if I was able log in without any help today!

Today was Treat Day! We had to bring in 25 cents to buy a treat. Mrs. Armour opens her "Bank Armour" if you forget - you can write a loan note for a quarter and bring it back tomorrow!
Thank you to Room 1 for supplying our snacks!

In Gym we are getting ready for the TERRY FOX RUN on Friday starting with our assembly at 10:15 am! Thank you to our volunteers who will be needed around the course so we can stay on track and those who help count our laps! The weather people are telling us it might be cold, rainy or even snowy, so make sure we all DRESS FOR THE WEATHER. Remember Terry ran 42 km every day while he was  running, so we will try our best to run at least 2 km!
We are running laps all week to get ready. Today we played Duck, Duck, Goose after we ran!

Yesterday we watched a short video showing us how to blend warm and cool colours to show a sunrise and sunset. Today we drew a line in the middle of the page and used pastels and blended with paper towel. We coloured and blended a lot so there was no white spaces. One side was to show morning the other side to show night - (ask me what colours I used for each side).

After quiet reading time, we are starting to share our books to let our friends know who the author is and what was our favourite part.

Thanks to our bloggers this week Karthik, Avery, Iain and Yazmine and all our other classroom helpers.

Have a great day!
