Tuesday, October 8th

We got our new jobs for the week yesterday. Ask me what my group's job is! Thank you to Max, Adeline, Enxin and Joel S. who are helping with the Blog!

Math - we are starting patterns (although we really have already been talking about them with multiplication! and with the cycle of the sun and shadows.) We are colouring number patterns in 120 charts using 2's/3's/4's/6's. This will help us practice our multiplication facts by looking at patterns (how the core numbers repeat). Today we wrote 2 rules about patterns:

  • a pattern has to repeat at least 3 times to be called a pattern
  • the CORE is the part of the pattern that repeats
Then we had to make 3 different patterns in our math books like Days of the Week/Months of the Year or 10 months on school, 10 months off. Ask me if I can find 3 patterns around the house!

Writing - Mrs. Armour read the book, Circle of Thanks by Susi Gregg Fowler. The grade 2's wrote about what they were thankful for yesterday and tried to use descriptive words (colour, size and shape). Today the grade 3's wrote about what/who they were thankful for and why. The grade 2's had to pick something in the book and describe it (Arctic fox, Otter pup, Raven, Caribou, a boy).

We were outside for soccer skills yesterday but today back in the gym playing mini games.

Art Science- we are using the same technique with warm/cool colours for the background and then creating a spooky, Halloween picture using black paper cut outs - this is called silhouette. It looks like a shadow. Next week, we will start to brainstorm describing words and begin planning our story about our picture.

Some of us who finished our picture made paper friendship fortune cookies! All you need is to cut out a circle and then fold it just right and slip in a happy note about friendship!

At the end of the day, Mrs. Armour is reading aloud from the book, Blacky the Crow by T.W. Burgess. Ask me what is happening in the story.

Our friend SaaKokoto will be with us at Dr. Coffin on Thursday. We are looking forward to hearing more of his stories and teaching us about the Blackfoot ways of knowing.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO JOEL L. tomorrow!

LOOKING AHEAD: Happy Thanksgiving - Non-instructional Day this Friday, October 11th. No school Thanksgiving Monday, October 14th.

Your student should have brought home swim forms today. The dates are October 24, 28, 30 and November 4, 6, 13. Each classroom requires 3 volunteers for our walk to and from the swimming pool. Our class will be swimming from 1:30 - 2:10 pm so if you can volunteer we would need you between 1:00-3:00 pm.

Parent council tonight in the Learning Commons at 7pm!
