Friday, December 6 - Jr. Geologists and Ice rock experiment

In Math we have been working on place value (ask me about the ones, tens and hundreds houses - only 0-9 can live in each one!), "rounding" up and down to "friendly numbers" to estimate and discussing how fractions describe "pieces/parts" of a whole.

In Writing we have started our Christmas/Winter Story and are trying to add at least one simile or metaphor to each section. Our plan should be done and we can start our "sloppy copy" next week!

We continue to do daily "Wonder Word" to practice how sounds go together and how we need at least one vowel in each word.

Here was one of our WW this week...how many little words can you make from o, t, g, r, n, s

For social studies, we watched another history video of Calgary between the years 1947-1960. We learned there was a lot of building during that time. 30, 000 homes built plus the first mall ever - can you guess which one? We learned that most of the population was working in oil, gas or construction and then we did a poll of our class to find out what our parents work at today.

Today we started with Big Buddies - they read to us and we shared our Story Plan with them. We played some games.

We got together with Room 4 and 5 to practice singing our Rock song for Festive Evening THURSDAY, DECEMBER 12TH.

We also watched a video with the big question "Will a mountain last forever?"
Then we did a science experiment with ice rocks. We put it in a container and shook it to see how it would change. Ask me what happened!

We found an example of ICE WEDGING...ask me what it is and how it relates to ROOT WEDGING.

Monday is Library.

Our field trip to Glenbow Museum is WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 11TH. We still need volunteers. Thank you for emailing Mrs. Armour if you are available for the day.

Fill a Sock  Campaign- Running from Monday Dec. 9 – Friday Dec. 13, Dr. Coffin will support the Drop In Center’s “Fill a Sock, Fill a Need” Campaign again this winter season. On Christmas morning the Drop in Center likes to surprise their clients with a sock filled with the things that we all need on a day-to-day basis. Here are some of the items we are collecting starting on Monday: Socks (this will be what we use to stuff everything into), Gloves, mitts and hats, Lip balm, Travel size toothpaste, Toothbrushes, Hand Warmers, Calgary Transit tickets, Cough drops, Travel mugs, Deodorant, Brushes and combs, Chocolates and Candies, Razors and shaving cream, Travel size Shampoo and conditioner.

POLAR EXPRESS DAY - Monday, December 16th - wear festive pj's and we will be "boarding the train", sipping hot chocolate and listening to Mrs. Kidd read The Polar Express.
