Tuesday today - Tomorrow Twin/Triplet Day!

Today we added to or edited our Journals from yesterday. Ask me how I improved
my writing! Did I add interesting words? Did I check for capitals and periods in the
right place? Did I change how I started my sentences or have a lot of "and then,
and then, and then...?" Did I answer the questions who, what, where, when?

We did another word problem in Math today.

Timmen has 26 rocks. He wants to build Inuksuks on the tundra.
He only want to put 6 rocks in each inuksuk.
How many inuksuks can he build?

How many rocks will he have left over?
Challenge: What if each inuksuk has 8 rocks, how many can he build and how
many rocks will be left over?

Ask me if I figured out the answer. Ask me if I wrote a word sentence, a number
sentence and drew a picture.

In Science - we were back working on insulating our Arctic Buddy - we need to make
sure he/she stays WARM (in the "Arctic" fridge) and DRY (during the rain storm).
Ask me what materials we are using and how I'm working in my group.

In gym this week, we will be using the parachute to learn cooperation and have fun!
TWIN/TRIPLET day tomorrow - if you aren't sure what to wear, you can wear your
Dr. Coffin t-shirt or hoodie!

RUN CLUB also starts up again tomorrow and every Wednesday at lunch. We run first
and then we eat together. (Reminder to wear running shoes bring your water bottle and
pack smaller containers of food that is easy to eat after a run.)

Signs of Spring!

Thanks Shemuella for sharing her favorite book about nocturnal animals!

Cedar from Room 2 brought Arctic artifacts to share with us and then we created a page
for our Arctic book.

We went outside to investigate signs of Spring. We were either an "I-spy-er" with binoculars, a photographer with an ipad, a recorder with a bug
list or the leader to keep us all organized!

See what signs of Spring you can spot this weekend

If you look really close, can you spot the woodpecker on the telephone pole?

Looking ahead - Wednesday is Twin/Triplet Day - find someone to dress like you!

Ms. Boyer's polar bear expedition!

Today after recess, we had two exciting visitors - Mrs. Boyer and baby Claire! Two years ago, Mrs. Boyer went on a polar bear expedition so she came to share stories, pictures and videos. Here are some fun facts and comments of what we learned.

All the polar bears are thinking about is seals, seals, seals!

Polar bears like to hang out around Churchill, Manitoba. Ask me why. (Hint: it has to do with the Churchill River).

Polar bears necks are the same shape as their head so they can stick their heads in the ice holes without getting stuck. Did you know polar bears and grizzly bear heads were different shapes?

People have to put polar bears in polar bear jail when they wander into town, they use a dart to put them to sleep first.

Don't go look for polar bears in a little race car because you'll get eaten. You need a big dune buggy bus and a guide.

There was a polar bear named "Goofball" because in one of the pictures he laughed and he stuck out his tongue and his tongue was purple and so long!

The polar bears wait by an ice hole and when the seal comes up for air, they grab it and eat it!

We saw a picture of "Old Guy" who obviously in fights because of scars on his back and face and was starving because we could see his bones.

We watched a video about a mom and her baby. The mom was trying to sleep and the baby was upside down and being goofy and pushing the mom's face.

Roman shared his King Cobra snake today. Mrs. Armour was very happy it was made out of wood and not real!

Shemuella is sharing on Friday. Anya's day is Monday.

Tomorrow for FRESH AIR FRIDAY we will going for a walk to observe signs of spring! Dress warm even though it's warming up later, it will be cool in the morning.

Wednesday - Inuksuit and Arctic Buddy Challenge

Did you know that more than one Inuksuk are called Inuksuit?

Did you know that serpentine rock is more common to use for carving Inuit art than soapstone?

Ask me how many types of Inuksuit I can name and what purpose they are used for.

This morning we drew more inuksuit to research all the different kinds. Some of us drew all of them except the three-rocked inuksuk. There was green and white paper we could use. Ask me what inuksuk I drew and labeled.

We measured and drew up our plans and started "digging up our rocks from the quarry" (cutting out our pieces of paper-rocks) today. We need at least 6 and no more than 12 rocks. Ask me which Inuksuk our group is creating.

Challenge Math question: If there are 5 people in my group and everyone wants to cut out the same amount and we need to cut out 20 rocks, how many rocks can each person cut out?

Think: If I needed to measure someone's arm and I didn't have a measuring tape or ruler, what else could I use that might work?

We started to plan how we will insulate our "Arctic Buddy" (a water bottle). In our groups, we discussed which materials we would use and wrote down our hypothesis starting with this question - "Can we keep our Arctic Buddy warm and dry?"

Today we had music and played our recorders.

WELCOME TO SION (pronounced Shawn/Sean) and SARAH. We miss Kashia and Birdy who have moved, but now have two new grade 2 friends in the Clubhouse!

LIBRARY DAY TOMORROW.

Thank you Jared for sharing about your trip yesterday! Thank you Max for sharing your inuksuk and information on how they are carved today! Tomorrow is Roman's share day and Friday it's Shemuella's turn.

Welcome April!

This week during our gym time we are creating our own "rhythm dance"
The Inuit use drums. We are using our bodies to create sound. We are working
in groups. We will practice Tuesday and Wednesday and be ready to perform
for our classmates on Thursday. We watched this video to give us some ideas.

At Carpet Connection time we shared three things we did during Spring Break.
We practiced saying what we would write in our journals to help us remember.
Grade ones this is a challenge to practice writing more. Grade twos, your
challenge is to add more details to the middle sentences.

My three favorite things I did during Spring Break were hiking, swimming and
watching a movie. (Hamburger bun/opening sentence)
First, my family went for a hike to Banff. (ketchup/detail)
Next, I went swimming with my cousins. (pickles/detail)
Then, my friend and I watched the movie Christopher Robin. (cheese/detail)
My Spring Break was so fun! (Hamburger bun/closing sentence)

In Word Work we will be learning the parts of a sentence. Noun, verb and adjective.
Can you find the noun, verb and adjective in this sentence?
Red planes fly.
How many other sentences can you make with nouns, verbs, adjectives?

In Math we have a INUKSUK CHALLENGE for the next while.
Using paper here is our challenge:
1. Our Inuksuk has to be as tall as the tallest person in our group.
2. It has to be no wider than the shortest person in our group.
3. No "rock" can be longer than the tallest person's arm.
4. We must use at least 6 "rocks" and no more than 12.
Ask me how many different kinds/uses the Inuit have for Inuksuks.

In Science we will continue to think about Insulators. Today we discussed everyday insulators around us like water bottles, lunch kits, clothes, coats, boots and even fibreglass insulation for our walls (the itchy stuff you need gloves for!).
Our challenge will be creating an insulator for our "Artic buddy" (a water bottle). It will have to pass the cold/warm and water test. You can look around your house and recycling and IF you have extra supplies at home you would like to bring in, please do. If not, that's okay! We will have plenty of supplies here at school as well (including the water bottles).  Remember, it is just to insulate a regular size plastic water bottle. We will be working in groups.

It is Jared's share day tomorrow.

Save the date for the On-line safety parent night on April 23 presented by the
Calgary Police Service.

Warmest Wednesday Ever!

"CLUBHOUSE VOICES"

Today Georgia found a pine cone and split it open. It was a cool pattern inside!

We were outside for gym and jungle safari at the playground, Shemuella and Abi's favorite was the monkey bars and glider.

We made our own math problem with things in the classroom like blocks and cards.

We had a fire drill while we were outside for gym! The school got out in less than a minute!

We got our Clay for Kids glass Inuksuks. They were beautiful. We will hang them in the coat room for awhile so everyone can admire them!!

Today Elizabeth saw a bird - she was going to show us, but the fire drill interrupted her and then the bird flew away! She is still not sure what type of bird - hopefully it will come back soon.

Kipling shared his awesome snake book, he shared snake facts at the end of the book.

Kipling's book was fun and I learned a lot from it.

We did playground safari again. My favorite was the monkey bars!

We played a 4 square relay. Each of us had a number and when Mrs. Armour called our number, we had to run, touch the number and do an activity.

Today was really warm. Plus 18 degrees celsius! Just a little while ago it was -18 degrees. (Can you figure out the difference?)

We got our glass Inuksuks back. It wasn't sharp anymore. It felt nice and smooth.

LEARNING AT HOME - GOOGLE CLASSROOM - MRS ARMOUR'S CLUBHOUSE

Hi Clubhouse Families; Just a reminder we have moved to GOOGLE CLASSROOM for all our learning. Please remember to sign in with your child...
