Monday, June 5th

Today we started with journals - after time to draw our pictures, we met on the carpet to share about our weekends and help our brains get ready to write about the "who, what, where, when and how" details.

After recess, Mrs. Armour read the Enormous Carrot. We noticed things that were similar and things that were different than the Enormous Turnip. Some details that were the same - a vegetable that grew enormous!  It took a lot to help and the smallest one was the one who finally helped get it out of the ground. They made the carrot into soup. Details that were different - there were animals instead of people, each animal brought something to help like rope or a tractor, and they had a big party with all kinds of carrot food, even carrot ice cream!
Reading these stories help show a pattern that we can use when we write our story about Nose hill animals and plants. Mrs. Armour wrote another story about the badger who became a herbivore as another idea.

After a little time to work on our story plans and story writing, it was time for math groups - some of us made our own number lines and practiced using them while working on addition and subtraction problems.

After lunch, we read a story called Roberto, The Insect Architect and then discussed how you need a plan and a good imagination before you build. We looked at our houses, building and sketches from Heritage Park in our groups and started sketching our plan and thinking of what materials we might need to build it. If you have any extra cardboard, clear plastic, extra lego, small pebbles, toilet paper rolls, egg cartons...can you help us look through recycling at home for things that might be used to build our city from 100 years ago? Thanks so much! We will start to build this week when we are done our plan and have our materials.

For gym, we used lacrosse sticks and balls and practiced our hold (2 hands top and bottom with the "face" or pocket net looking away from us) and our scooping the ball from the ground. We watched a short video about how some of the First Nations people still make their lacrosse sticks from trees and carve it and use leather to lace the net. We found out they have been playing a type of lacrosse for over a hundred years!

REMINDER: Tomorrow is our day to turn in all our library books - please help us look through the house and bring back all our books for Mrs. Kidd so she can get them all organized. Thanks so much!

Tuesday and Thursday from 1:00-2:45pm we will be swimming. Thanks for sending a swimsuit, towel and an extra swim bag to carry to the pool. An extra snack is great as we are all hungry after swimming and our big walk back to the school - thanks!

Wednesday is Beach Day for school spirit day, so dig out your hat, flip flops, sunglasses and crazy beach shorts and shirts (No swimsuits thanks). Wednesday is also running club, so please put in your running shoes and be ready to run your 2K (or more!) We only have 2 more weeks to reach "Humboldt" and need all the help we can get!
