Wednesday

We had so much fun creating our own Math problems today to challenge our friends. Here is what we need to think about before writing our word problem.

1. What do I want my problem to be about? Animals/Food/Flowers/Bicycles/Dinosaurs?
2. What is my problem? What am I trying to find out? How many feet/cherries/petals/wheels/tails?
3. Do I have my question written out clearly? How many ______ altogether?
4. Large numbers are fun, but it gets a bit challenging...so just keep it simple (between 1-10) and have fun with the "story".

Example: If there are 3 red flowers and 2 yellow flowers on a hill and each flower has 5 petals, how many petals altogether?
Remember you need a NUMBER sentence and a WORD sentence and a PICTURE to get full points!
You can always get out the lego or blocks or pennies to "see" the problem first.

FUN LUNCH TOMORROW for those who ordered.

LIBRARY TOMORROW.

PARENT CONFERENCES are next week March 21/22nd.

Treat Day Tuesday

Today we started to pack our suitcase for our trip to the Arctic! We are using our research to decide what to bring for clothes and activities. Ask me what colour my suitcase is, What place "stickers" I have on the outside and what are a few of the things I am making to put inside.

For Word Work today we had to listen carefully - Mrs. Armour read a sentence and then we had to print it. It's called "dictation" and it's a good way to practice our word families. We wrote 3 today and we will write 3 tomorrow and 2 on Thursday. This will help us see which words we know and which ones we need to practice.

Math - we were all "game testers" today. We are playing each other's board games to see if they all "work" smoothly. We are giving positive, helpful feedback on our friend's games, so they can be the best they can be for Friday. We will have a "game extravaganza" on Friday morning with our Big Buddies. We will try another word problem tomorrow.

We did another observation of our Ice Village and recorded our findings. We needed to include the date, the temperature, at least one sentence, and a diagram. We noticed some melting, some breaking and predicted our village will be covered with snow again soon!

Thanks Elizabeth for sharing her favorite song today by Dean Brody called, "It's Friday."
Tomorrow is Colin's share day, so we hope he is feeling better!
Thursday is Emmaline's day (and Fun Lunch!)
Friday is Georgia's day.

Thanks for help with the Blog today...in Gym we are using scooters!

"In Gym we did a relay."
"We raced. I do not know who won."
"Today was a fun day. Quiet reading was nice. Word Work was fun."

Fresh Air Friday - Arctic ice

Christopher's share chair day - He shared his favorite movie and we watched the trailer. Teen Titans.

Today as scientists we observed and investigated what would happen to the
level of the water when a glacier melts. We created "Baffin Island" out of
clay. We took 3 measurements starting with one cm. Ask me what I observed!

A big THANK YOU to Graham's mom Amy who shared her experience in the Yukon. We saw
pictures of the northern landscape and activities, felt rabbit fur around beaded moccasins(ask me what the thread was!) and ate bannock!

Thursday - more pictures!

Today we added "Arctic Animals" to our research page. Thank you to Kipling for bringing in his animals for us to see and hold. Kipling, Abel, Graham and Lucas even created a new Arctic Animals book to add to our classroom library!

For word work today we had to create a word that had at/in/op/ug/ig/en when we rolled the dice. We printed the words in our books.

In Math we solved the word problem. Ask me how I did. We need to write a number sentence, word sentence and show how we figured out the problem (pictures or tallies). We are going to create our own word problems after we practice with a few more.

"Today was Library. The book I got was Cat's cradle. Yay! I love library."

"Today was cool. We climbed up the climbing wall and had outside recess and lunch."

"Today we finished up Jungle Safari in gym. I was a monkey!" On the red mats we had to do 7 squats and on a few of the blue mats we had to do 7 jumping jacks! We conquered the jungle!

We had "finish up" time or Mathletics after gym today. Ask me what I had to complete.

FRESH AIR FRIDAY TOMORROW - DRESS FOR THE WEATHER.

Drop Offs/Pick Ups - a reminder to please use the cul-de-sac or side roads. The staff parking lot is for staff only. Thanks for helping us be safe!

Share Chair friends next week: Abi (Monday) Colin (Tuesday) Elizabeth (Wednesday) Emmaline (Thursday) Georgia (Friday)

"Spring ahead" your clocks when you go to bed on Saturday night.

A reminder that the deadline to order Fun Lunch from Extreme Pita is tomorrow night, Friday, March 8, at 11:59 pm.

When Will Windy Wednesdays Warm?

Today we had indoor recess in the morning and outdoor recess at lunch - it was cold and windy! Our temperature graph didn't get as high today!

We researched clothing and things to do in the Arctic today. Ask me what the word for coat is in the Inuktitut language? (Hint: it starts with a "p" and we use it in english!) We read the book Snow Bear again while watching a video of the "Frozen Seas". Mrs Armour will post the link below - it helped us feel like we were right there with the polar bears and icebergs!

For word work we played a game with dice and letters. Every number 1-6 was matched with a vowel and then we had to think of a word (or find it on our word wall!) with that vowel in it. Ask me some words our group made or maybe we can play this game together?

During Math we discussed word problems and how to solve them. It's important to read all the words and then find the important words to find the solution. We then tried to do one by ourselves all about 5 cows, 2 chickens and 3 pigs (How many feet altogether?) Ask me what strategies I used to solve it.

During science we discussed our experiment and the insulators we tried. Ask me which is the best insulator we tried and how does that help me understand how polar bears keep warm. If you want to challenge yourself, you could look in your closet and try and find the coat that would be the best insulator - why?

GRADE TWOS - PLEASE RETURN DENTAL SURVEY FORMS TOMORROW. Even if you choose not to participate, please send back white envelope. Thank you!!

LIBRARY THURSDAY - thanks Mrs. Kidd for making our cool reminder cards - please return the cards with the books - we are suggesting you use them for a bookmark.

Thanks for dressing so warm for these cold days. It looks like we are finally going to get a break with the frigid weather, but we will be outside a lot more now, so thank you for continuing to dress in layers, snow pants, boots, hats and mitts - just like in Nunavut!

Check out our science experiment investigation and our jungle safari!

March is here!

We are keeping track of the daily temperature and how it changes. We made a line graph (ask me how this is different than a bar graph) to show a week of ups and downs. Today at 8:30 am, it was -23 degrees celsius and at 3:00 pm it was -7 degrees celsius! Challenge: How many degrees warmer was it at 3pm than at 8:30 am?

We discussed "hamburger writing" today (ONE topic sentence - the bun, then ADD 3 DETAILS pickles, lettuce cheese, then a CLOSER - another bun.) We practiced sharing about our weekend and tried to say just one topic sentence and then added a few details like WHO was with us, WHERE we were and WHEN it happened. This will help us learn how to write paragraphs and later, stories. Ask me what I wrote about in my journal. Did I try the hamburger strategy?

For Math, we did a "show and share" with Room 1/2 with our game boards to practice sharing and explaining and to see if we could get or give any more ideas for our games.

During Word Work, we worked on a "word family" challenge to see if we could get at least 3 words from -AT, -EN, -IG, -UG, -IT, -ACK. The grade 2's extra challenge was all the "long a" words they could think of on the back of their sheets. This helps us with our writing and reading when we are learning to sound out words.

For Gym this week we are doing Jungle Safari - it was fun! Ask me what the challenge is !

We had Music today - ask me what the surprise was!

We are bringing home some writing/printing sheets - please take and look in our backpack.

SHARE CHAIR - We now have a Tigger rocking chair in our room - every day will be a special share day for a different person and they will get to sit on the Tigger chair and share:). Please check the blog as we will let you know who's turn it is. There is also the calendar inside the door of the clubhouse that you can check.

Wednesday - Birdy
Thursday - Carmen
Friday - Christopher
Please talk at home about something you can share that will take about 5 minutes. Ideas: "favorites" (book, movie, stuffie, holiday, animal...) Sports, Music, Poem, Art...
