Today we started with journals - after time to draw our pictures, we met on the carpet to share about our weekends and help our brains get ready to write about the "who, what, where, when and how" details.
After recess, Mrs. Armour read the Enormous Carrot. We noticed things that were similar and things that were different than the Enormous Turnip. Some details that were the same - a vegetable that grew enormous! It took a lot to help and the smallest one was the one who finally helped get it out of the ground. They made the carrot into soup. Details that were different - there were animals instead of people, each animal brought something to help like rope or a tractor, and they had a big party with all kinds of carrot food, even carrot ice cream!
Reading these stories help show a pattern that we can use when we write our story about Nose hill animals and plants. Mrs. Armour wrote another story about the badger who became a herbivore as another idea.
After a little time to work on our story plans and story writing, it was time for math groups - some of us made our own number lines and practiced using them while working on addition and subtraction problems.
After lunch, we read a story called Roberto, The Insect Architect and then discussed how you need a plan and a good imagination before you build. We looked at our houses, building and sketches from Heritage Park in our groups and started sketching our plan and thinking of what materials we might need to build it. If you have any extra cardboard, clear plastic, extra lego, small pebbles, toilet paper rolls, egg cartons...can you help us look through recycling at home for things that might be used to build our city from 100 years ago? Thanks so much! We will start to build this week when we are done our plan and have our materials.
For gym, we used lacrosse sticks and balls and practiced our hold (2 hands top and bottom with the "face" or pocket net looking away from us) and our scooping the ball from the ground. We watched a short video about how some of the First Nations people still make their lacrosse sticks from trees and carve it and use leather to lace the net. We found out they have been playing a type of lacrosse for over a hundred years!
REMINDER: Tomorrow is our day to turn in all our library books - please help us look through the house and bring back all our books for Mrs. Kidd so she can get them all organized. Thanks so much!
Tuesday and Thursday from 1:00-2:45pm we will be swimming. Thanks for sending a swimsuit, towel and an extra swim bag to carry to the pool. An extra snack is great as we are all hungry after swimming and our big walk back to the school - thanks!
Wednesday is Beach Day for school spirit day, so dig out your hat, flip flops, sunglasses and crazy beach shorts and shirts (No swimsuits thanks). Wednesday is also running club, so please put in your running shoes and be ready to run your 2K (or more!) We only have 2 more weeks to reach "Humboldt" and need all the help we can get!

Heritage Park Day
What a beautiful day we had to go back in time to Heritage Park! We are all pretty tired out, but had so much fun...
"Jumping into 1915"
No water in here - but we found a nest of baby birds!
"Hey, this buffalo rubbing stone isn't magical!"
Can you imagine living in a sod house all winter?
Listening carefully to the teacher!
Finally, the candy store!!
Wanted - a few students from Dr. E.W. Coffin!
- seeing horses, cows, chickens, turkeys
- looking inside old houses
- seeing people making pies and bread
- touching fur in the Hudson Bay Company Fort
- sitting inside a tipi
- playing in the school yard
- sitting in the old school (the teacher was pretty strict!)
- watching and riding the old train
- watching the blacksmith hammer on the anvil
- hearing about how the doctors used onions and medicine
- getting put inside a real jail cell by a NWMP (North West Mounted Police)
- going to the candy store, the bakery and the ice cream parlour!
Ask me what my favorite part was! Here are some pictures...because Mrs. Armour had a group she was with - these pictures are mostly of her group - feel free to check out Mrs. Boyer's and Mrs. Hamby's blog to see their pictures too!
TOMORROW IS SWIMMING in the afternoon - please remember your swimsuit, towel and a separate bag to keep your wet stuff in after swimming (then you don't have to carry your whole backpack to the pool!)
FRIDAY IS A NON-INSTRUCTIONAL DAY - No school for students.

Tuesday, June 5th
This morning some of us needed to finish up our journal writing and then we worked on our story plan sheet. We discussed and thought about which characters we will use, the setting (Nose hill), what the problem might be (connecting with the needs of all animals - food, water, shelter, space), how the characters will try and fix the problem and then how to have a fun, interesting ending!
Mrs. Armour read a book called Armadillo Rodeo by Jan Brett. Ask me what my favorite part was!
Today was our last Library day to take books out. Next week Mrs. Kidd will ask us to make sure all our books are back to the library, so she can start organizing for the end of the school year.
In Math groups today, some of us were using tens and ones to show a different way to add, some of us were showing how many different ways you can add 2 numbers to make 10, and some of us read a story about odd and even again and then used the 100 chart and dice to practice adding and figuring out if our answers were odd or even.
We had running club today because of our field trip tomorrow. Not as many ran, but some new people joined so we had a total today of almost 90 laps! We have ran over 400 laps altogether and are over "halfway to Humboldt"
After lunch, we used the Glenbow Museum archive photographs to discover what Calgary looked like around 100 years ago - ask me what we discovered about food, clothing, houses, transportation and sport!
We played Kick ball again today...we are learning to watch the ball and when our team mates kick it, we need to run around the 3 bases and beat the outfielders. If there is a tie, the runner is safe! There is a lot going on, but we are trying to be good sports and help our team!
TOMORROW WE ARE GOING TO HERITAGE PARK for the day. Dress in layers with comfortable shoes, a healthy lunch and water bottle. We are excited to discover what Calgary looked like a long time ago!
Thursday, June 7th is our first swimming day. Please wear comfortable clothes that are easy to take on and off. Please send a towel and a small bag/backpack if possible. We will walk to the pool just after 1:00pm and return after 2:30pm.
FRIDAY, JUNE 8th is a Non-Instructional Day. No school for students.
June 13, Wednesday is spirit day - dress like you are going to the beach! (Sorry, no swim suits though!) Hats, sunglasses, Hawaii or Mexico shirts/shorts/sun-dresses are great!

Monday, June 4th
Today we started with journals about our weekend. Each group had a top 100 spelling words sheet to help us edit our writing.
We will be starting story writing in the mornings, so today Mrs. Armour read, "The Enormous Turnip" and we discussed the pattern in the story of starting with the main character and adding one each time. Each table group wrote a "fill-in-the-blank" story adding their own characters - some were quite silly! Ask me about the story and what our group wrote about!
We had math groups today, some played a harder race to 100 with tens and ones, and some of us played some games with odd and even numbers. Here is the poem Mrs. Armour read in her group -
If you are an even number
You always have a pair
So if you look around
Your buddy will always be there
If you are an odd number
There's always a lonely one
He looks around to find his buddy
But he's the only one!
We played kick ball for gym today. We played grade 2 boys and grade 1 girls against grade 1 boys and grade 2 girls. We kicked high and we kicked low and we tried to beat the ball to the base!
Make sure you check out our new Aspen grove of trees and bench beside the playground. Thank you to all the volunteers that help make this happen. Beautiful!
LAST LIBRARY TOMORROW - bring back your books so you can exchange one more week!
WE WOULD LOVE SOME MORE VOLUNTEERS FOR WEDNESDAY for our Heritage Park field trip. Please send a note with your child or let the office or Mrs. Armour know. Thank you!
Thanks to all those who have volunteered for swimming on June 7, 12, 14, 19, 21 in the afternoon.
RUN 2K CLUB IS TUESDAY (TOMORROW) THIS WEEK BECAUSE OF HERITAGE PARK TRIP.

Rainy Friday
We started the morning by sharing our Dioramas with our Big buddies from Room 6 and 7 - it was fun to tell them all about our animals and their habitat!
We thought about the rain and birds and how they might adapt. We discovered that birds fluff up their feathers to keep warm, but if it rains for a long time, even birds get wet and cold and hungry. Larger birds like eagles and crows stay warmer longer than little birds like chickadees and hummingbirds.
We went outside for a walk to Whispering woods to see if we could see any birds...and then we discovered egg shells on the ground - 5, 6, 7! They were about the size of a chicken egg and a creamy colour - see if you can do some research and come up with an idea of what kind of bird might have laid and hatched those eggs! Exciting!
We had indoor recess and then Saa'Kokoto came and told us another story about Okotok (ask me what this means and what the story was about!) and we sang together.
In our Visual Journals we drew symbols and wrote words that reminded us of some of the learning Saa'Kokoto has taught us. The whole school signed a Dr. Coffin T-shirt and we presented it to him in the Learning Commons. We are glad we don't have to say, "Good-bye" just "See you next time!"
Have a great weekend!
Reminder - Heritage Park field trip on WEDNESDAY, JUNE 6th. Dress for the weather
Swimming dates: June 7/12/14/19/21 We will be walking to and from the pool in the afternoon.
Thank you to all who can volunteer for these dates! Enjoy our pictures!!

What a Learning Celebration Day!!
Wow! Great job everyone!! We are so proud of all the hard work we did to share so many things about what we have learned about animals, plants and history of Nose hill! Here are a few photos during our rehearsals. Thank you to all the family and friends that came and shared our assembly and our dioramas back in the classroom! Phew! We are all tired and should sleep well tonight!
Tomorrow is our last day with our friend and teacher SaaKokoto. We are excited to hear more stories from him and will miss him.
Thank you for all the returned Heritage Park and Swimming forms!
Please sign and return Friday if you haven't yet.
If you are able to volunteer for JUNE 6th (Heritage Park) or any of our swimming days (June 7/12/14/19/21)- let the office or Mrs. Armour know. Thanks so much!

Wednesday - Ready, Set...ACTION!
This morning we had our "dress rehearsal" and performed for the Kindergarten class because they will be away on a field trip tomorrow. It was great to have a real audience!
We had another practice this afternoon - our songs are sounding great and we can't wait to show you! If we have speaking parts, we are going to practice tonight at home speaking s l o w l y and clearly with expression:) Everyone is working really hard all doing their part to show off our learning!
Remember to wear "animal colours" to school tomorrow for our LEARNING CELEBRATION at 11:00AM! Anything brown, black, grey, white will be great - if you don't have plain (no words on the front) shirts, remember Mrs. Boyer said you can turn it inside out and it will work great - dark jeans are fine as well - Please plan to stay for a little bit after so we can share our dioramas with you!
Just a heads up: A phone message was sent by Mrs. Polski regarding the Aspen grove trees and volunteers needed to help dig the holes on Sunday between 10-1. Please call the school if you can volunteer to help with the digging of the holes in preparation for the 9 aspen trees we have coming to enhance our Nature grounds.
Looking ahead:
HERITAGE PARK FIELD TRIP on Wednesday, June 6th - form is coming home today - thank you for signing and returning this right away.
SWIMMING starts in June!
June 7th/12th/14th/19th/21st Forms also coming home today - thanks for letting us know what swimming experience your child has and returning them so we can inform the pool.
Here are the dates if you can volunteer we would love to have you! We will be walking after lunch to and from the pool, and will need help before and after in the change rooms. Both moms and dads (grandpas and grandmas) with volunteer clearance are welcome!!
Sorry - all the toner in the printers ran out at the same time - so we are just a bit behind with the forms - thanks for signing all the paper during your busy evenings - we really appreciate it!
See you tomorrow!
